From Dating to “I Do” – the significant role of friends, family and community.
A conversation with Dr. Leah Hakimian Sponsored by Gloria Feldman and Family

Leah Hakimian is a chronicler of romance and matrimony who researches the question of how Jewish couples meet and marry. Dr. Hakimian,
a web columnist for The Jewish Week, a leading American Jewish newspaper based in New York City, has interviewed over 130 couples and
has documented their love stories for her column. The stories are also posted in her blog, Godsend, published in The Jerusalem Post. She began
writing her column in 2006 for the St. Louis Jewish Light. Before moving to Israel in 1998, she was a founder of Connections of St. Louis, a
Jewish Federation service to help Jewish singles find mates. She takes credit for 15 matches, and is a passionate advocate for the role of
community in helping singles meet. In her first career as a Jewish educator in St. Louis, Dr. Hakimian served as the principal of the Solomon
Schechter Day School and Associate Executive Director of the Central Agency for Jewish Education. Leah’s family is closely identified with Brith
Sholom Kneseth Israel (BSKI) and Shaare Zedek. She is the daughter of Jacob and Sarah Elbaum. Mr. Elbaum taught Bar/Bat Mitzvah students
and served as Hebrew School Principal at BSKI from 1926-1983. At the same time, he served as the secretary of the congregation.
Mrs. Elbaum was an active volunteer in the BSKI Sisterhood. Leah is also the widow of Yusef Hakimian, former President of BSKI. Leah’s sister,
Nancy Makovsky, taught at Shaare Zedek Sunday School when her husband, Don, was the principal. Leah has a Ph.D. in education from
St. Louis University and a B.A. from Washington University. She splits her time between Jerusalem and Great Neck, New York. She is blessed
