Marvin Lerner has been a “master” Baal Koreh reading Torah at Shaare Tzedek and Kol Rinah for 37 years! On Purim we would unroll the Torah and he would recite any passage the Rabbi would point at!
Lerner grew up in west St. Louis city. Marvin read an entire Torah portion at his Bar Mitzvah at Nusach Hari B’nai Zion. Marvin went to High School at the Chicago Jewish Academy Yishiva. There he lettered three years in baseball!
Lerner studied at Harris Teachers College in St. Louis to become a public-school teacher. 12 credit hours short, the Head of the German department had him sit in the back of the room and write sections from the Torah by heart, which he did flawlessly, and thus was granted credit to graduate and begin his teaching career in a public school. Lerner later fin-ished a master’s in geology at Webster University.
Lerner did many various things in life from teaching earth science to junior high students in the Pattonville School District, sold insurance, drove a school bus, and taught afternoon Hebrew school and Shaare Zedek Sunday School.
Lerner also fulfilled a passion by graduating from the police academy and later joined the Maryland Heights force as a reservist. He spent more than 20 years as a reserve police officer in the two departments. “I wrote a lot of speeding tickets,” Lerner said.
Lerner was also a master in Gematria! "חכם תורה = 358 "Torah Scholar” + Chai = 18
Torah Scholar +Chai = 358+18 = 376 and 376 = Shalom!

Caleb Arnow is a senior at John Burroughs School. He will be attending Brown University after taking a gap year to study at a yeshiva in Israel. At Brown, he intends to concentrate in chemical engineering and then pursue a career in sustainable energy. At Burroughs, Caleb has been a leader in the Jewish Culture Club, the Climate and Culture Advisory, and the Investment Club. He played football every year in high school, earning the honor of Academic All-State as a senior. Caleb also received a National Merit Letter of Commendation and is an AP Scholar with  Honor and a nominee for the Presidential Scholars Program.
At Kol Rinah, Caleb has been an assistant teacher at KoREH for four years and co-leads the BMitzvah chug. He also reads Torah and Haftarah when he can. Caleb is a group leader of Student to Student (a program of the Jewish Community Relations Council of St. Louis), a teen fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute, a volunteer at KUTO (Kids Under Twenty One) crisis hotline, and a volunteer SAT and math tutor. Caleb attended Camp Ramah in Wisconsin for 8 summers, participated in Ramah Israel Seminar last summer, and plans to return to Ramah Wisconsin as a staff member this summer. Caleb is a big sports fan, especially of the Green Bay Packers, the New York Mets, and the New York Knicks.

Claire Spector is a senior at John Burroughs School. She will be attending Vanderbilt University in the fall and plans to major in mechanical engineering. In school, Claire is co-Editor of her school’s yearbook and she co-founded the Jewish Affinity Club to create a safe space for Jews at Burroughs. She is also a leader of Montgomery Plan, her school’s community service organization, where she plans volunteering events and fundraisers for local charities. She has also received a National Merit Letter of Commendation.
Claire attended preschool at Kol Rinah and has worked as a madricha in the religious school for the last two years where she also tutors in Hebrew and co-leads the BMitzvah chug to prepare students for their Bar and Bat Mitzvot. She is also involved in the Student to Student program through the JCRC as a group leader, helping to introduce Judaism to high school students around St. Louis. Claire enjoys spending her time dancing, reading, and playing lacrosse. She choreographs for The Dance Show at Burroughs and has been Captain of her lacrosse team for the last two years.

Dr. David Kantor was born in 1951 in Kansas City. David is a first-generation American on the Kantor side. Shaping his formative years, were frequent visits to shul and family celebrations of Shabbat and Holidays. Moving to St. Louis in 1961, they joined B'nai Amoona, leading to an important transition in David's life. His spiritual journey evolved as he honed his role as a Jewish educator.
While attending Washington University, he served as BA's Youth Director, focusing on progressive themes such as the changing role of women in Judaism. Encounters with some of the great Jewish minds of that time, such as Arthur Waskow, Adin Steinsaltz and Rabbi James Diamond, continue to inspire David's Jewish journey.
He shares three wonderful children, Nava, Eitan, and Noam, with Lynnsie Balk Kantor.
Combining passion and principles, he stands as a model of tenacity and unwavering commitment to faith and community. A busy, long-time family physician, he will always make time for teaching and spiritual engagement at B'nai Amoona, and is a welcoming presence to all who come there.

Sydney attended the congregation’s summer camp, Camp Ramot Amoona, and stayed on as a counselor-in-training, counselor, and swim instructor. She also worked as a Madricha for 2 years in the Meyer Kranzberg Learning Center religious school. Sydney adores preschool kids and works with them whenever she can, either babysitting at Shabbat services or working at the Linda Rotskoff Early Childhood Center after school. Sydney also participates in the St. Louis Jewish Community Relations Council’s Student-to-Student program, educating peers in area high schools about Judaism. Sydney was the 2022 recipient of the Meyer “Mickey” Kranzberg Scholar Award, given to one Mirowitz 8th grader each year.
At Pattonville High School, Sydney is also an active leader. She has been a member of the Student Council since freshman year and has run their student store for 5 semesters. She is also on the junior class board and enjoys being on the costumes crew for theater productions. Sydney is a born leader and makes friends wherever she goes. All of the groups she works with rely on her responsibility and maturity and are better because of her participation. She is indeed a worthy recipient of B’nai Amoona’s Youth of the Year!
