Shared Education in a Divided Society
Join Lee Gordon and Dr. Ayala Hendin for a thought-provoking conversation on the role of shared education in bridging societal divides.

Lee Gordon will give the Shabbat sermon and both will lead an after-kiddush conversation.

Dr. Hendin, an Israel Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, researches Israeli politics, policy, and society, focusing on education and higher education.

Lee Gordon, co-founder of Hand in Hand: Center for Jewish-Arab Education in Israel, has spent decades fostering partnerships through bilingual, integrated schools.

Israel’s state education system is divided into four main streams—Jewish secular, Orthodox, ultra-Orthodox, and Arab—reflecting deep religious and national identities. While in the U.S., educational separation is often viewed as a form of discrimination, in Israel, it is frequently framed as identity recognition. This discussion will explore the challenges and opportunities of shared education within a divided society, highlighting models such as President Rivlin’s “Israeli Hope” initiative and the “Hand in Hand” network of Jewish-Arab schools.

Join us for a session of learning, dialogue, and reflection on what it means to build a shared future through education.
