Ruth Bader Ginsburg grew up in a middle-class Jewish immigrant family in Brooklyn. She became a law professor who was a pioneer in litigating on behalf of women’s' rights and who argued six gender equality cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. She went on to serve as an appeals court judge for 13 years and was the first Jewish woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, where she was a Justice for 27 years.
Justice Ginsburg spoke and wrote often about how her Jewish upbringing affected her judicial philosophy.
