Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Noah Arnow 11/27/2020

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

At Torah Talk at noon today
, we'll be talking about some connections between Jews and Native Americans.

It's a way of reckoning with the "history" of Thanksgiving - that story of Pilgrims and Native Americans at Plymouth.

Thanksgiving, like so many moments, has elements that point us in conflicting emotional directions.  We express gratitude for our bounty, for whatever we have in terms of food and prosperity, and comfort, but also in terms of the people in our lives.  But there's also this historical dimension which, as we think about it now, is the beginning of a story of genocide, colonialism, theft, and violence.

Thanksgiving this year also has its own paradox: we are grateful for what and who we have, and also sad for all those, ourselves included, whose tables are surrounded by fewer people - whether because they are not coming into our house, not traveling, or no longer part of this world.

Being able to hold, notice and experience all these conflicting emotions is to me an important part of being Jewish, and being human.

My sermon from last week is available on our website here.
