Shabbat Shalom and Happy New Year from Rabbi Shafrin! 1/1/2021

Dear Kol Rinah Families,

Happy New Year, Everyone! It is a pleasure to formally welcome each and every one of you into this first day of 2021! It may seem as though 2020 was much longer and more intense than a mere twelve months could be, but today we turn the page and start a brand new year with many reasons for hope on the horizon.

Similarly, this week we read the final portion of Sefer Bereishit, The Book of Genesis. We put to a close the contentious, fraught, beautiful, heartbreaking, and somehow still hopeful story of Jacob, his 13 children, and the 70 people who made up his extended family, now recently relocated into Egypt.

If you have read through Torah before, however, you know that it is not all sunshine and rainbows ahead. The Book of Exodus recounts one of the darkest chapters in our history, and yet it is a story of redemption so powerful that it has shaped and inspired cultures around the world for milennia. If the Book of Genesis is a beginning, the embarking point on our human journey, the transition into the Book of Exodus is a liminal point from the journey of our human family into the travails and travels of our Jewish one.

That is where we sit as we enter this first Shabbat of the New Year, caught between where we were and where we want to be, between the trials we have overcome and those that still lie in our future. No matter what lies ahead in 2021, we know that none of us will be able to return to a simple routine. There will be new realities to which we need to adapt and new measures we will need to take to ensure we can all live safe, healthy, happy, and meaningful lives together.

More than anything, I pray that 2021 WILL be a year of being together, of standing together to support one another and, God willing, one day be being together in person. I hope that we can all move on to the next chapter in our lives and in the life of our community. I long for that blessed day when we can see each other smile and, once again, celebrate all together.

Thank you for all of your care and support for one another over the past year. I wish you a new year full of blessing and success, happiness and joy, health and security, and positive steps toward a world renewed.

Shabbat Shalom and Happy New Year,
Rabbi Shafrin
