Dear Kol Rinah Families,
Over this past year, we as a nation have been engaged as never before in a conversation around race and justice. We have wrestled with where we fit in as individuals and as a community, how we speak out for those appressed and ally ourselves with others in need, and what our role is in helping to bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice.
This weekend, we honor the memory of one of the most prolific figures in the fight for equality in this country, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King fought not only for justice and equality for people of color, but also for an America where all were free to live lives of meaning and purpose, with the promise of opportunities and freedoms that our nation was built upon. It is fitting, therefore, that this week, in Parashat Va'era, we see the beginning of our own redeptive story, our journey from the dark night of slavery in Egypt to that bright dawn of freedom and a nation where we could safely chart our own destiny as a Jewish people.
Today, America faces many challenges to define ourselves, our values, and the course our nation will take into the future. We have much to reckon with from our past, and even from this past year, but we also have shown time and time again how much we can accomplish when we value all that we have in common and overcome our differences to create a better future for one another. I hope and pray that we can take inspiration from the work of Dr. King and move closer to that glorious day when we can all live together safely in the spirit of community and love.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shafrin
