Dear Kol Rinah Families,
This past week, mere hours before the start of Tu Bish'vat, the "Birthday of the Trees," my two boys challenged me to a snowball fight. As we were romping through the newly fallen snow, I was recalling being in Israel for Tu Bish'vat, looking around for the first blossoms to flower on the olive trees. It was certainly a moment of cognitive dissonance, preparing for a holiday which is all about growth, renewal, and rebirth in the natural world while the world we were inhabiting appeared cold, frozen, and asleep.
But that is much of the reality of our lives. What we see and experence may be only one level of understanding the world around us. While we may at times look bleak or scary or disheartening, underneath the surface, new life and growth may be waiting to burst forth. In Parashat Beshallach this week, we read about the Jewish People's final push to leave Egypt behind. It is not only their physical removal from bondage, but also their symbolic emancipation from a condition in which they were unable, as individuals and as a community, to grow, to change, and to blossom into who they were truly meant to be.
As we move through this winter together, we pray that the closed and sequestered places we have each been inhabiting can be opened wide. With each new person who is vaccinated against COVID-19, we move ourselves one step closer to entering that new world of possibilities together. We hope and pray that it will be soon, but until then, we must work to keep one another safe, both by following safety protocols, wearing masks, and being cautious, but also by showing up emotionally for the people in our lives who can use our help and support during these trying times.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shafrin

Having just celebrated Tu Bish'vat yesterday, we are now almost exactly four weeks away from Purim! We are still looking for people to use their talents and skills to help us put together socially-distanced, pre-recorded hilarious bits for our Purim schpiel this year. Specifically we are looking for:
1. Singers with good voices to help with the audio track for a Purim music video.
2. Clever people who want to help write & edit schpiel.
3. Dancers for a 1-hour music video shoot, outdoors.
If you are interested, please email Benj Singer at: benjamin.d.singer@gmail.com ASAP.
Shabbat Shalom and Happy New Year,
Rabbi Scott Shafrin
