Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov from Rabbi Shafrin! 2/12/2021

Dear Kol Rinah Families,

TODAY IS ROSH CHODESH ADAR! Why am I so excited?! Because it's just that time of year! Our Jewish calendar is full of highs and lows, and when the new month of Adar begins, our rabbis, since the time of the Mishna, have reminded us that this whole month in which the holiday of Purim falls should be a joyous one.

Sometimes, that's easier said than done. In any given month, there are days in which we are just beset by woes that we can't just shake off or smile through. Sometimes there are wounds that hurt, pain we must endure, challenges we work our way through. Sometimes, a positive attitude is not enough.

But I believe that our tradition is not telling us to be naively positive or to ignore the world around us. If we look at both the holiday of Purim, as well as the Purim story, it is all about a community coming together to celebrate in the face of their collective challenges. Purim shows us the power of gathering with those you care about, even virtually, in order to celebrate our times of joy and strengthen us in times of pain.

And so this year, we will once again reach out, join together, and bring each other a little bit of extra joy and camaraderie as we start this new month together.

Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh tov,
Rabbi Shafrin
