Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Noah Arnow with exciting Shabbat service news! 2/19/2021

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

I'll say more about this Shabbat further below, and more about Purim too.  But what I *really* want share with you all is what's happening *next* Shabbat, on Saturday morning February 27.

Here's the description:
Kol Chadash - A Shabbat Morning Prototype
Music. Harmony. Joy. Spirit.  We are always looking for new ways to help our entire Kol Rinah community find spiritual meaning and fulfillment.  Please join us as we come together virtually to explore a new kind of prayer experience.  On Saturday morning, February 27, in place of our regular service, Kol Rinah will be streaming a special service led by Rabbi Arnow, Rabbi Shafrin, and Karen Kern that will feature music with acoustic instruments.  We will bring together new melodies and words of Torah to create what we hope will be a deep and moving experience. We'll be focusing on some particular prayers and words, and only including parts that don't require a minyan.  Watch, sing and be with us from 9:30-11:30am, and share your feedback!

During this time of streaming services amidst Covid, we felt like it was a great time to try something new and think about creating new models of prayer and services to engage us differently, and perhaps engage different folks in our community.

What we'd really like to do is have a couple of hundred people together, singing, davening, and maybe even briefly dancing, led by a "davening team" of a bunch of people.  Let me know if, when we're ready, you'd be interested in being part of the "davening team."

But for this first time, it'll just be Rabbi Shafrin, Karen Kern and me there.  We won't have a minyan, which means there's lots we can't do, which means there's lots we have time for.  We'll still start at 9:30am and finish at 11:30am.  We'll still read yahrzeits.  And we'll move through the different parts of the service, but we will just focus on particular parts of each section - just Shema and the first sentence of the V'ahavta, for example, although in no less time that we usually take in saying all three paragraphs of the Shema.

The music will be a mix of the fresh and familiar, some old and new favorites, including melodies it doesn't always make sense to do when you have a lot of words and siddur pages "to get through."

There will be a little more talking and framing of the prayers than we usually do, helping us to move from section to section, and focus on the few(er) words we'll be singing.

This is a
prototype--trying something out with minimal investment, knowing it won't be the final version, to get feedback.  If the feedback is pretty positive, it's something we'd think about doing every 4-6 weeks.  And depending on interest, maybe there'd be a more traditional service happening before or simultaneously.  We've also heard there may be interest in thinking about other modes of innovative prayer that would be a cappella and we'll be starting conversations about that over the next month.  Let me know if you're interested.

If you want to hear some of the music we'll be singing, check out our website here:

But let's talk about this Shabbat!

Today at noon in Torah Talk, we'll have a light romp through Purim, including a potential case of mistaken identity and Eating Purim.

We'll have mincha and Kabbalat Shabbat at 4pm today (4:30pm next week).

Candle lighting is at 5:26pm.

Saturday morning we'll be streaming services from the Sanctuary.  It's Parashat Terumah and Shabbat Zachor.

The readings are:
Exodus 26:1-30 (triennial section of Parashat Terumah)
Deuteronomy 25:17-19 (Parashat Zakhor--the only part of the Torah we are commanded to hear read!)
1 Samuel 15:2-34

Shabbat ends at 6:26pm.

Sunday afternoon at 4pm will be the first of our new monthly series on
Jews in Science.

Purim is obviously coming, as are your Mishloach Manot, if you're a member of Kol Rinah.  We'll follow up with another email about all the Purim details early next week, and details are also
here.

Shabbat shalom, and see you on Zoom,

Rabbi Noah Arnow
