Dear Kol Rinah Family,
I don't often write to you about legislation, but today I will. The Missouri House of Representatives is debating amendments to HB 1141, a bill to have students' grades that were negatively impacted by Covid not prevent them from getting scholarships. The bill itself is not why I am writing about this; the amendments are.
One amendment that was adopted yesterday bars transgender youth from participating on a sports team that corresponds with their gender identity.
Another amendment being debated bans the teaching in public schools of critical race theory, as well as any curricula by a number of organizations, including WeStories, with whom Kol Rinah has partnered.
The Jewish Community Relations Council of St. Louis has spoke out against these bills, and is asking people to contact their representatives. Details are here. I'm grateful to the JCRC for their leadership.
As a reminder, churches and synagogues cannot endorse candidates without jeopardizing our tax-exempt status, but we absolutely can advocate on particular issues.
We may be able to change minds on this legislation; we may not be able to. I will be embarrassed to live in a state with legislation like this on the books. Our Torah portion this week says, "Reprove your fellow but incur no guilt because of them" (Leviticus 19:17). As the Etz Hayim Chumash says on this, "In other words, admonish your neighbor for their wrongdoing so that you will not incur guilt on your neighbor's account." This is to say, we should try to change this, and if this passes, if we did not protest (and perhaps even if we do...), this harmful legislation will also be on our consciences.
Tonight at 6pm, we'll have mincha and Kabbalat Shabbat on Zoom. (Link below)
Candle lighting is at 7:28pm.
Tomorrow morning we'll be streaming from the sanctuary starting at 9:30am. (Link below)
We'll read Parashat Acharei Mot-Kedoshim
Torah: Leviticus 17:8-19:14
Haftarah: Amos 9:7-15
Shabbat ends at 8:29pm.
Sunday night at 7:30pm, Phyllis Hyken will be leading a program on Poulenc's opera, "La Voix Humaine." Details here.
Thursday night and Friday is Lag B'Omer and at 6:30pm Thursday we'll be having a bonfire and ice cream in Shaw Park.
And much more is on the website!
Finally, a generous member of our congregation has a number of Passover meat dishes and cooking implements/equipment they are still happy to give to someone who would like them. Let me know if you are interested!
Shabbat shalom, and see you soon, I hope!
