Dear Kol Rinah Family,
What would you do if much of your life and work shut down for a year, and you couldn't do it? Uhh, sounds kind of familiar, right? This year, we've lived through a kind of shemita, or sabbatical year, a year when we are supposed to let our fields lay fallow and not plant them. We can pick whatever happens to grow, but the rule is that you can't plant or work the land.
And this has longterm implications. In year six of the seven year cycle, people know that the following year, they won't be able to plant. They are supposed to have an extra good harvest, provided by God, to be able to sustain themselves for the next years. Then, in year seven, they don't till or plant or prune. They harvest whatever happens to grow. The following year, they plant again, but there's quite a while until new crops come in.
We couldn't plan for the year that we've had. But like the shemita year, it's actually longer than a year. And the effects will be felt for a while, and will slowly recede, much more slowly than they began.
The Torah says nothing about what the Israelites would do with all their newfound free time. Maybe they took long walks, baked sourdough bread, and binged Netflix. Or maybe that had plans, things they planned to do during their "sabbatical year."
If you could have planned for the kind of year that we've had, what would you have planned and done differently?
