Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Shafrin! 7/23/2021

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Do what is right and what is good. That's what we are told to do in this week's Torah portion, Va'etchanan. Along with a recounting of the Ten Commandments and the beginning of the Shema, this week's Torah portion delivers this simple message to the Jewish People. After four decades of wandering, after a long journey from slavery to freedom and now on to a land of their own, Moses pleads with his community to remember the most important of all the lessons they have learned, that without one another, they are lost.

This message rings especially true right now. I cannot count the number of times over the past year where I have been helped or saved in a moment where I was overwhelmed by a simple kindness, human courtesy, or offer of help from someone who understood that we all have struggles and decided to lend a hand. I have been so heartened to hear stories like these again and again: people struggling to keep themselves and their loved ones safe throughout the pandemic, people worried about making ends meet or taking care of their emotional well-being getting some aid from the simple kindness of others. I am so proud of al lof the generosity this community has shown to one another and all of the people we come in contact with every day.

It is amazing how much a little good can do to improve the whole world, how much a kind word or compassionate act can heal. So, as we move out of the dark reflections of Tisha B'Av and toward the bright light of a new year, do what is right and what is good. Now is the perfect time to recommit ourselves to doing all that we can for the people around us.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Scott Shafrin
