Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 7/30/2021 7/

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Today we said goodbye to Mendel Rosenberg, who had been a member of Shaare Zedek and Kol Rinah for more than sixty years.  Mendel, a Shabbat regular, was a past president of Shaare Zedek, and so loyal to our shul.  Mendel survived the Shoah, and spoke about it hundreds of times over the last forty years to thousands of people.

I ended my eulogy by quoting his deeply abiding faith that "life can get better."  It was this belief that sustained him during his darkest days and that motivated him his entire life.

The new information we're learning about the Delta variant, together with the high rates of Covid in our state are very worrying, for our health, for what the coming months may look like, and for what this may mean for our reopening.  We will be thinking carefully about what will be most prudent and appropriate for the High Holidays and other upcoming events.

But I want to remind us, as Mendel did, that it may not be as soon as we want, but life can get better.  That's what I need to remember this Shabbat.

Thanks to Dr. Wendy Love Anderson, Kol Rinah's rabbinic intern, for leading Torah Talk today.  Wendy's internship ends tomorrow, and I'm so grateful to her for all her teaching and leadership, and as well as for the conversations she and I shared that really made me reflect on what it means to be a rabbi.

Tonight, we'll have services on Zoom at 6pm.

Candle lighting is at 7:56pm.

Tomorrow we'll have shul in person at 9:30am, and livestreamed as well.
Torah: Deuteronomy 9:4-10:11
Haftarah: Isaiah 49:14-51:3

Mincha/maariv/havdalah will be here at 7:50pm.

Shabbat ends at 8:57pm.

Shabbat shalom, and see you soon, I hope!

Rabbi Noah Arnow
