Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 8/13/2021

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

There's something I'd really like you to read.  It's a study that just came out this week:

"Beyond the Count: Perspectives and Lived Experiences of Jews of Color is an unprecedented study of the Jews of Color community that will enable the Jewish community to implement more change for racial equity and inclusion. Beyond the Count is based on data from 1,118 JoC survey respondents (the “Count Me In” survey), and 61 JoC interview participants, and was conducted by a multiracial research team housed at Stanford University."

The full study is available here:
https://jewsofcolorinitiative.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/BEYONDTHECOUNT.FINAL_.8.12.21.pdf

Some press and articles about it are available here:
https://jewsofcolorinitiative.org/what-we-do/research-field-building/

As you read, think about where you find yourself in this study.  Have you ever asked potentially instrusive questions about a Jew of Color's background?  I have.  While in a Jewish space/context, have you ever made an assumption about someone based on their skin color or tone? I have.  Have you ever felt uncomfortable because of looking different in a majority white Jewish space?  I have not.

What are the feelings and thoughts this study provokes or inspires in you?  I welcome conversation with each of you about this.

The data, for me, was powerful.  The quotes are powerful.  The complexities of this, including around Israel, and around the usefulness and challenges even of the category "Jews of Color," are real too.

I will state the obvious--Kol Rinah is a predominantly white Jewish space.  And we have members and friends and participants who identify or could identify under the umbrella of Jews of Color.

Elul is not necessarily the time for making all the changes we need to make in our lives.  But it is a time for noticing, and reflecting, and evaluating, a time for remembering, and anticipating and hoping.

So, read the study, please, and start reflecting.

Today at noon, I'll be teaching Torah Talk on Zoom (link below).  We'll try to figure out what exactly Moses means when in Deuteronomy 18:15, he says that God will raise up "a prophet like me."  I think it'll be a rich conversation.

Tonight at 6pm we'll have mincha and Kabbalat Shabbat on Zoom (link below).

Candle lighting is at 7:40pm.

Tomorrow morning services are 9:30am, and we have plenty of room for people to come, still.
This week we read Parashat Shofetim:
Deuteronomy 18:6-19:13
Haftarah - Isaiah 51:12-52:12

Mincha, maariv and Havdalah will be at 7:30pm.  Last week we only had nine people, and a number of people are traveling, so if you can make it, please let us know today!

Shabbat ends at 8:42pm.

A special thank you to Rabbi Mordecai Miller, one of Kol Rinah's rabbi emiriti, for his teaching this past Wednesday in the first session of our classes preparing for Elul.  This Wednesday Rabbi Shafrin will be teaching.  All the details are here:

Shabbat shalom, and see you soon,

Rabbi Noah Arnow
