Dear Kol Rinah Family,
Sometimes, it is hard to change. The ancient Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, famously said that "the only constant in life is change." Indeed, every minute of every day, we are each in a constant state of change, as is the world around us. But even though we know that this is true, there are some moments where it feels like our lives change in leaps and bounds. There is no greater example of this than Avram's story in this week's parashah, Lech Lecha. Avram goes from mild-mannered son and husband to having conversations with The Creator of the Universe and leaving everything he has ever known (at the age of 80) and journeying out into a new, strange land.
So much happens to Avram, so many challenges faced and trying decisions made. It reminds me of all of those times in which it felt like life was speeding ahead at 100 miles per hour and everything was changing so fast that it almost felt like too much, even if the changes were exciting and full of promise.
It is helpful, especially in times of change, to remember what anchors us, what grounds us to reality and ourselves. Think of those family members and treasured friends with whom you can connect (or reconnect). Find those moments of quiet to reflect, be they every week on Shabbat, during the morning before anyone else is awake, or whenever you can find them. Dig deep and find the wells of calm and focus inside yourself that you might have never seen before, but have always been there.
Then, much as Avram and Sarai before us, we can each have the courage to venture out into something new, and just maybe, we will end up exactly where we are supposed to be.

Mazal tov to parents Barry and Alyssa Duel on the bar mitzvah of their son, Ari, this past Shabbat! We are sending blessings to your entire family on your marvellous simcha!
Mazal tov also to John Singer and Emily Adams on their wedding last Sunday, as well as to parents Don and Joanne Singer and Mike and Kathleen Adams!
And now, on to this coming Shabbat! Today, I'll be leading Torah Talk this afternoon at noon (12:00pm) learning about the inner workings of the lives of Avram and Sarai, the original Jewish forebearers. We will take a look at how they build their lives together and how they, as a family, envision and plan for their lives together. It should be a fascinating look behind the curtain of their lives (see link below).
Tonight, our Kabbalat Shabbat services will be on live and in person at 6:00 PM in the main sanctuary at Kol Rinah. They can also be livestreamed using the same link as our Shabbat morning livestream (see link below).
Candle lighting tonight is at 6:05 pm.
Tomorrow morning, we will be in the sanctuary for our Shabbat morning service and will of course also be streaming from the sanctuary starting at 9:30am. We will have a special treat as our ShinShin, Roi Mast, will be joining us to share a few words of Torah and little about himself as well (see link below).
