Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Shafrin! 2/4/2022

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Please note: This Shabbat, we will not have services this Friday night or Saturday afternoon, but we will have services Saturday morning in the sanctuary.  More details below.

Well, it's looking a lot like winter out there! We hope you have all been able to stay safe and warm and keeping busy as the snows of the last two days have begun to abate. It's an interesting way to start off February, as well as the new month of Adar I. Yes, you read correctly, there will be TWO months of Adar this year, as it is a leap year on the Hebrew calendar. So it looks like the groundhog was right and there will be many more weeks until spring!

I have always found snow days to be an incredible phenomenon. On the one hand, if you do them right, they can be uniquely fun and exciting and special in a way that few things are, especially when you are young. But the break from the norm, and the inability to really get out and do things can also be stressful, create tension, and make us more irritable than we might like. But I have found that, like so many things that are beyond our control, if we lean into those pieces of joy, whether it's going sledding, eating a special treat, or snuggling up with a good book or a loved one (or both!), we can make the most of these rare opportunities when they come along.

So, as we roll into Shabbat, I hope you are all cozy and confortable, and that you have a chance to rest and breathe and enjoy.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Scott Shafrin

Here is a link to Rabbi Arnow's fantastic sermon from last Shabbat on Parshat Mispatim, which dealt with sacred, communal eating as a valuable Jewish, cultural, social, and spiritual practice:
