Dear Kol Rinah Family,
There are not many sounds that a Jew is obligated to hear. We're obligated to hear the shofar on Rosh Hashanah. We're obligated to hear the Megillah on Purim (8pm Wednesday night and 7am Thursday morning, both in person and livestreamed!). And we're obligated to hear the special maftir (additional short Torah reading) this Shabbat (services at 9:30am, Torah reading around 10am), which is known as "Parshat Zachor," Deuteronomy 25:17-19, which reminds us to remember what Amalek did to us, killing the weakest of us. We are to blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; "you shall not forget."
Why do we need to hear this every year? To be reminded that there will always be enemies, whether of Jews or of peace-loving people. And to be reminded that those in the end who will suffer will be those who are weakest, poorest, most on the margins--the most vulnerable.
What it means to be a Jew, then, is to do what we can to remember and resist these enemies, and to stand up for all who are more vulnerable than we are.
This resonates with me in so many ways, in so many contexts. Where does it resonate with you?
Looking back for a moment at last Shabbat, mazal tov to Jared Snyder, his parents Al Snyder and Sharon Rosenberg, his brother Ryan, and his grandparents (our members) Alan and Donna Rosenberg!
This Shabbat, candle lighting tonight is at 5:46pm.
We'll have services tonight at 6pm in person (and livestreamed). We definitely could use a few more people tonight--come if you can!
Tomorrow services will be at 9:30am. We'll be reading Torah at about 10am, with the special maftir for Shabbat Zachor at about 10:40am.
At 10am, there will also be a special, Purim-themed Tot Shabbat.
(I'm so happy Tot Shabbat is back!)
Saturday afternoon mincha/maariv will be at 5:40pm, and Shabbat ends at 6:40pm.
And of course, Purim is coming this week! All the details are here.
May we all stay safe and healthy, and I hope to see you soon.
Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
