Dear Kol Rinah Family,
As the days get longer and, we hope, the weather gets warmer, I often find myself looking for all the ways I can get just a little extra time outside. Whether it's taking a quick walk, making some phone calls outside, or even just opening my window shades to let the sunshine in, for me, being outside brings me joy, a sense of calm, and a connection to the greater world around me.
These little actions are ways I have found to take care of my own well-being, which, honestly, I sometimes forget to do. I was powerfully reminded of this fact the other day when I was a part of a live learning session with April Baskin, founder of Joyous Justice, and a visionary teacher for reshaping Jewish institutions and spaces into equitable, inclusive, warm, and relational communities that honor the uniqueness of every person, whether they walk through our doors or not. And something she shared with us was how doing the hard work of fighting for justice or improving our communities or even just tackling a project you believe in needs to go hand in hand with regular, mindful self-care. This framework brought up a few questions:
What are the ways you connect with the world around you?
What is something you could do today to create joy?
What are the ways you can show up for yourself, care for yourself, so that you can show up for other people?
As we stand on the cusp of this Shabbat, I hope we can use these 25 hours to create sacred space for ourselves and for one another. Most of all, I hope that we can emerge into next week with a centered space for ourselves to do the work that needs to be done, but not at the expense of our needs, our health, or our sense of hope for the world.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Scott Shafrin
