Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Shafrin 4/29/2022

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Yesterday, Jewish communities all around the world commemorated Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. For the first time, my children were old enough to ask me real questions about the Holocaust: What happened? Why were so many stripped of rights, possessions, property, dignity, and ultimately lives? How could so many people let such horrors be perpetrated? How could so many risk and sacrifice their lives to save complete strangers?

I consider myself very lucky to have grown up with personal relationships to survivors of the Holocaust, people who escaped the terrors of the Nazi regime, who fled anti-Semitism in many parts of the world during the 20th Century, and who shared their stories with me. I found myself retelling these same stories to my 1st grader, explaining the needless horrors that so many have gone through.

And when it was clear that he understood, at least the facts, and I felt like I didn't need to go on further, I finished up by saying, "This is why we remeber these stories, why we remember the terrible things that have happened to our people: it's because terrible things are still happening to many people, and this reminds us to do everything we can to help as many as we can with whatever power we do have."

When I think about these moments, the first thing I reflect on is how proud I am to be a part of this community, a community that is working to build a more just and equitable world. Our amazing Tzedek team, our staff, our board, and so many of our members have been engaged over the past several years in working for justice through every avenue available to us.

And I am even more proud that this year, on Sunday, May 15, Kol Rinah will host our first ever Mitzvah Day. This incredible event will not only be full of opportunities to do direct service for the many people in our community who might need help, but it will also be a showcase of the incredible partnerships we have been developing with other organizations and communities to do justice here in St. Louis. We will be learning how to effectively communicate with, and apply pressure to, our elected leaders in order to address real concerns in our community. We will be collecting food to benefit our local Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry, and we will also be collecting money which will benefit our local community as well as our siblings in Ukraine who are struggling against an unjust invasion of their sovereign land.

I encourage you to sign up, check out the amazing activities we will have for every person in our community. Click

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Scott Shafrin
