Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 6/17/2022

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

I was recently asked what my "specialty" is as a rabbi.  I responded that I give a good class on the weekly Torah portion (in my humble opinion).

So here's something I've been thinking about that, recently. Torah Talk is the class on the weekly Torah portion that Rabbi Shafrin and I take turns teaching each week.  We used to do the class (pre-Covid) during the time of the Torah reading on Saturday mornings.  During Covid we moved it to Fridays at noon on Zoom, which is where it's stayed.

We have a few people who come on Zoom, who would not be able to come in person.  And we also have people who don't come because they're busy on Fridays at noon.

I'd think about moving it back to Saturdays during the Torah service, but with maybe 35 people there during the Torah service, taking people out during the Torah service would leave the room even more empty. And some of the people coming on Zoom are there on Saturday morning but wouldn't leave and miss the Torah reading.  There were people who used to come Saturday mornings specifically for Torah Talk who might come if we restarted it on Saturday mornings. It is nice to have a critical mass--with just a couple of people, it's not as much fun or as interesting.  And our attendance on Zoom has waned, 2+ years into Covid...

So what to do? We could do it twice, which has a critical mass problem.  We could go back and forth, sometimes on Fridays, sometimes on Saturdays. (Could be confusing.)  What other creative solutions do you have?  If you're someone who comes, or used to come, or would come again, what thoughts do you have?

I will be leading Torah Talk today at noon; we'll look at the those words you've probably sung, "Vayehi binsoa aharon vayomer Moshe..."  Join us on Zoom.

Services tonight will not be at our building, neither inside nor outside it!  Instead we'll be at the Shaw Park South Shelter (where Lag B'Omer was this year and last) at 6pm for an abbreviated service and byo picnic dinner.  We'll have the challah and grapejuice.  All are welcome; the playground is nearby for those so inclined.

Candle lighting is at 8:11pm.

Tomorrow morning services will be at 9:30am in the Sanctuary.  Mincha will be at
8pm, and Shabbat end at about 9:14pm.

Calling all gardeners!  Our new KR Gardening Circle will be meeting on Zoom Tuesday evening at 7:30pm (
details here) to begin planning some gardening activities to beautify and enhance our grounds at the shul.  We could use your enthusiasm and/or green thumbs!

We're in the midst of planning for Summerfest, which will be an amazing music festival Sunday August 21 here (outside) at Kol Rinah.  We need your support and sponsorships:

May we all stay safe and healthy, and I hope to see you soon.
Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
