Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 7/15/2022

 
Dear Kol Rinah Family, 

One piece of news: We have heard you. The requirement to register to come to services is a barrier for many people. Beginning immediately, we are no longer asking members to register for services. We will still request that first-time attendees register to attend services so that we can properly welcome them.  We can't wait to see you back in shul, whenever the fancy strikes you!

My grandparents' house was a legendary place for kids to play, with lots of great nooks and crannies and staircases in which to hide and chase playmates.  My grandmother used to say, "Too much laughter turns to tears," because she saw, firsthand, over several generations of kids for fifty years in that house, how play that gets too excited can result in someone getting hurt.

One can find this pattern too in history if one looks for it--"irrational exuberance" in our financial markets, the "Roaring Twenties" followed by the Great Depression, etc.

Our Jewish calendar creates this dynamic as well--the fun of summer is interrupted by the 17th of Tammuz--a fast day beginning the Three Weeks, leading up to Tisha b'Av--the 9th of Av.  The 17th of Tammuz (tomorrow, but the fast is observed Sunday because we don't usually fast on Saturdays) commemorates the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem in 586 BCE.  The 9th of Av commemorates the Temple's destruction three weeks later, and the entire period, and especially the last nine days of it (known as "The Nine Days") is a time of increasing mourning. Our summer laughter turns literally to tears.  

This has been a hard summer, a summer with many tears already for many of us.  Our nation's politics leave many of us in despair.  The economy and inflation are making people's lives harder.  And Covid, while seeming perhaps less dangerous for some, feels more widespread than ever.  

Needless to say, I have no prescription for how to make everything (or really, even anything) better.  

But here are a few things to try--and nothing new here--just reminders. 
-Eat deliciously and healthfully.  
-Sleep enough but not too much. 
-Exercise and stay active, even if it's hot outside.  
-Connect and reconnect with people, family and friends, whether in person, on the phone or even on Zoom.  Who have you not spoken to recently?  
-Join us for minyan on Zoom.  Your presence will be counted! 
-Come to services on Shabbat.  Come sing with us on Friday nights, settle into Shabbat morning services, and bid Shabbat farewell at mincha/maariv/havdalah. Your voice and your soul will help to make something greater than the sum of its parts.
-Donate to causes that matter to you--even in small amounts, small increments.  You'll feel like you're doing something that matters in a way that you can do. 
-Volunteer in ways that are meaningful.  We need help with all kinds of things at Kol Rinah, and lots of the things important to you in the world need your labor and love now too.  

Specifically at Kol Rinah, we could use help watering some newly planted trees.  It takes about 90 minutes, and requires moving a hose, and standing and walking on uneven ground.  It needs to be done Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  If you can help out even once in a while, let me know!  

Today, Rabbi Shafrin will lead Torah Talk at noon on Zoom. 

Tonight, we'll have services at 6pm in the sanctuary.  

Candle lighting is at 8:07pm,

Tomorrow morning, we'll be in the sanctuary at 9:30am. 
Tot Shabbat will be at 10:30am.  

Mincha/maariv/havdalah will be at 7:55pm, and Shabbat ends at 9:10pm.  

The fast of the 17th of Tammuz (observed on Sunday) begins Sunday morning at 4:12am.  Services will be on Zoom at the usual times (8am and 6pm)--links below.  

The fast ends at 9:01pm.

2. Click "change plan settings" next to your current power plan
3. Change "Put the computer to sleep" to never
4. Click "Save Changes"

For Apple Products:
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click "Energy Saver."
2. Do either of the following:
          a. Set the amount of time your computer or display should wait before going to sleep: Drag the “Computer sleep” and “Display sleep” sliders, or the “Turn display off after” slider.
          b. Keep your Mac from going to sleep automatically: Select “Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off.”
