Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Shafrin! 7/22/2022

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

In this week's Torah portion, Parashat Pinchas, contains within it some of the most often read sections of Torah because it includes one of the most complete Biblical calendars of the Jewish year. It contains the sections on Rosh Chodesh, which we then read at the first shacharit (morning) service of each new month. It contains readings which explain parts of the celebrations for Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Shemini Atzeret, giving an amazing account of the meanings of these special times, their interrelationships, and a few of the rituals for each.

I have always appreciated that even though we each have ways in which we celebrate any point on the Jewish calendar, whether it's Shabbat each week or Rosh HaShanah to begin a new year, so much of the emphasis of the Jewish holidays are on connecting with the people around us. We gather to hear the sound of the Shofar, to dance with the Torah, or to take shelter beneath the sukkah. We make space for one another to pray, to sing, to learn, and to grow, and with each cycle of the year, these holidays give us new opportunities to create relationships with one another, often in surpising or unexpected ways.

So, this Shabbat, as we learn about Parashat Pinchas, I want to challenge each of you to reach out and find new ways to connect. You don't need to wait for the next holiday (though there's always one right around the corner), just look for opportunities to build relationships with other people.

If you haven't been to Shabbat services in a while, come check us out! Our Kabbalat Shabbat and Shabbat morning services are always integrating new melodies, experiences, and people into the space we share together, like this coming Shabbat morning when our Kol Chadash musical service will making its long-awaited return.

If you are looking to learn, we have opportunities all the time, some virtual, some in person. If you have something to teach, we are always looking for people to help our students learn at our Kol Rinah Education Hub (KoREH), especially if you are a high school student who might be interested in being a madrich/madricha and helping our teachers in the classroom.

If you are looking to find folks with similar interests, our ever-expanding network of KR Circles might just have a group of people who are waiting to welcome you into a fun, new activity. And if you don't see a KR Circle that fits you, there's always room for you to start your own!

Parashat Pinchas shows us a highlight reel version of community, the best and most exciting times for us to gather together in community, share our sacred space, build relationships, and create memories. But we can do those same things at any time, here in this community that we are, each day, building together.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Scott Shafrin

We want to wish a nisiah tova, a safe an successful journey to Rabbi Shulamit Cenker, who will be moving to Atlanta, GA at the end of the month. Rabbi Cenker has been a Kol Rinah member for several years and has been an incredible teacher, resource, and spiritual presence, as well as a valued member of our Chesed committee! We will miss her dearly, but wish her much happiness with her family in Atlanta.

This Shabbat is going to be incredible! Tomorrow morning marks the return of our Kol Chadash service for Shabbat morning, which will begin in our sanctuary at 9:30 am. If you have not joined us for Kol Chasash before, we would love to see you, hear your voice, and feel your energetic presence as we celebrate Shabbat in joyous song! We are always looking for new ways to help our entire Kol Rinah community find spiritual meaning and fulfillment.  Please join us as we come together to explore a new kind of prayer experience. The service can be livestreamed using the special livestream link below for Shabbat morning services.

Our service will feature music with acoustic instruments and will bring together new melodies and words of Torah to create what we hope will be a deep and moving experience. We'll be focusing on some particular prayers and words.  To make space for this, we won’t read Torah or Haftarah, but we will have a Torah discussion.  Come in person, or watch from home,, sing and be with us from 9:30-11:30am, and share your voice, and your feedback!
