Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 8/5/2022

 
Dear Kol Rinah Family, 

There's a legend (a midrash--in Lamentations Rabbah 1:20) that on the evening of Tisha b'Av (the 9th of Av--the day on which, according to Jewish tradition, both the first and second temples were destroyed), Abraham (yes, that Abraham) entered the Holy of Holies in the Temple.  God took Abraham by the hand, and asked, "What is My beloved doing in My house?" (quoting Jeremiah 11:15). 

"Where are my children?" asks Abraham.  God tells him they have sinned, and been driven into exile. 

"Were there no righteous people among them?" Abraham inquires, reminiscent of his conversation with God in Genesis 18 preceding the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah).  "You could have looked at the good ones among the wicked."  

God responds that the people were mostly wicked, that they had abandoned even the most basic of mitzvot (commandments).  

"And moreover," God concludes, "they rejoiced over each other's downfalls."  

God implies here that the worst thing the Israelites did, the sin that could not be overlooked, was rejoicing over each other's downfalls.  

God has no patience for endemic pettiness, competitiveness, and cruelty.  

For me, this is a reminder that any vestiges of happiness I feel when something bad happens to anyone I dislike are really unbecoming of a Jew, of a person.

Tisha b'Av begins tonight, but its observance is put off until Saturday night and Sunday, after Shabbat.

Rabbi Shafrin will lead Torah Talk today at noon on Zoom, focusing on the Haftarah for this Shabbat preceding Tisha b'Av, the beginning of Isaiah.  

Tonight at 6pm we'll have our family-friendly First Fridays Friday night service in the courtyard (weather permitting--if it's too wet, we'll be inside).  

Candle lighting is at 7:50pm.  

Services tomorrow will be at 9:30am as usual. There will be no mincha tomorrow.  

The fast begins at 8:07pm, and Shabbat ends at 8:50pm.  

We'll have maariv and the reading of Eicha (Lamentations) starting Saturday night at 9:15pm in person, in the sanctuary.  Sunday morning Shacharit and reciting/studying kinot (lamenting liturgical poems) will be in person at 8am, and mincha/maariv will be on Zoom at 6pm.  The fast ends Sunday evening at 8:35pm.  

One final note: a congregant who is downsizing has some beautiful menorahs (aka chanukiot) to give away.  If you would like any of them, please let me know!

2. Do either of the following:
          a. Set the amount of time your computer or display should wait before going to sleep: Drag the “Computer sleep” and “Display sleep” sliders, or the “Turn display off after” slider.
          b. Keep your Mac from going to sleep automatically: Select “Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off.”
