Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Shafrin 8/12/2022

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Listen and be comforted.

This week is Shabbat Nachamu, the Shabbat following Tisha B'Av, which is considered the most somber and mournful day on our calendar. It gets its name from the opening words of the 1st Haftarah of Consolation, in which the prophet Isaiah proclaims:

נַחֲמ֥וּ נַחֲמ֖וּ עַמִּ֑י יֹאמַ֖ר אֱלֹֽקֵיכֶֽם׃
Nachamu, nachamu ami, omar Eloheichem
"Take comfort, oh my people, declares Your God" [Isaiah 40:1]

After a day recalling so much tragedy and loss, it is good to have someone reach out and offer us comfort. But there is another piece to that experience: we need to be open to hearing and accepting words of comfort and give ourselves permission to hope for, and to build, a brighter future.

Which brings us to Parashat Va'etchanan, which includes the Shema, a touchstone of Jewish life and worship. These words, delivered to us by Moses and uttered throughout our history have brought a sense of safety and belonging to our People for millenia. We repeat the command to listen as an act of faith that we accept a reality in which there is something bigger than us, something larger than our own momentary needs or concerns, that links us together and binds us to the generations.

Take comfort, says the prophet; listen says the teacher.

We are able to be consolled in our darkest hours when we listen to the compassionate words of those who care for us. We are able to see hope in our most troubled times when we listen to the needs and fears of those around us and vow to make a better world for each of us to live in together.

Now is the time, when it seems like the weeks away from the new year are almost an eternity, when we can best look to bring comfort and care to those around us, listen to the needs that remain unfullfilled in our world, and make a plan well before the new year of 5783 begins so that next year, our lives and our world may be one step closer to the way they should be.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Scott Shafrin

I am very excited for this coming Shabbat! Tonight, at 6:00 pm we will be having services outside at Shaw Park where we have gathered previously for Shabbat and near where we had our Lag Ba'Omer event. There is a wonderful new playground right nearby for families to hang out on, and we encourage everyone to bring food and eat, pray, and sing together to welcome in Shabbat. There will be no livestream for Friday night, but everyone is invited to join us as we bring in Shabbat together with some fantastic energy and wonderful singing with beautiful nature all around us!

We will be having Torah Talk today on Zoom at noon! I will be leading a discussion on our first Haftarah of Consolation, which comes from the Book of Isaiah and which we will read this Shabbat, focusing on how the Sages of our Tradition helped outline a path for us to peel back layers of ourselves and do the work to start the year anew.

Tomorrow, we will be meeting in the sanctuary for Shabbat morning services starting at 9:30 am (livestream link below). Afterward, everyone is invited to join us for a lovely kiddush and some time to socialize together in the chapel.

Mincha/Ma'ariv services for Shabbat will begin at held this Saturday afternoon at 7:30 pm in our sanctuary.
