Shabbat Shalom & Chag Sameach from Rabbi Arnow 10/14/2022

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

This Saturday, the intermediate Shabbat of Sukkot, we chant the super-joyous Psalms of Hallel just minutes before reading the perhaps nihilistic book of Ecclesiastes.  Sukkot itself is a study in contrasts--joyous gathering in fragile, outdoor, temporary shelters, the long leavy/spiny green lulav and the round small yellow etrog.

One way of understanding this holiday is as exercises, practice, in spiritual, emotional and physical adaptability and flexibility--how well can we pivot from rejoicing to sadness to gathering to changing plans to go inside?

This is, after all, what life demands of us--to go back and forth and move between joy, sorrow, plans, improvisation, gathering, loneliness, meaning and meaninglessness, and everything in between.

Today at noon, Rabbi Shafrin will be leading Torah Talk at noon on Zoom.

Tonight, services will be in the chapel at 6pm for mincha, an abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat and maariv.

Candle lighting is at 6:07pm.

Tomorrow morning, we'll start at 9am in the sanctuary. We'll get to Hallel at about 10am, and then follow with a couple of chapters from Ecclesiastes.

We'll have a guest sermon and then some learning after kiddush in the sukkah with end-of-life consultant
Arielle Friedtanzer.  Sukkot, a time when we are especially aware of our impermanence, is an especially appropriate time for these conversations.

Also on Sukkot are special Shabbat Sukkot hoshanot.  And we'll be celebrating the 97th!!! birthday of Marian Katz.

Mincha will be at 5:55pm and Shabbat ends at 7:08pm.

The fun continues though with Hoshana Rabba--the craziest liturgical day of the year on Sunday at 8am in the sanctuary.

Then at 4pm on Sunday will be a special
klezmer concert.

Sunday night at 6pm will be mincha, maariv and yizkor for Shemini Atzeret.
Monday morning at 9am we'll have Shemini Atzeret services, with yizkor and Geshem (the prayer for rain).

Monday evening at 6pm we'll begin Simchat Torah with singing, dancing, and festivities.

Tuesday morning at 9am Simchat Torah continues with much Torah finishing and starting.  And the holiday season ends Tuesday nght at 6:59pm.

Shabbat shalom, chag sameach and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
