Shabbat Shalom and Kol Chadash is Back 11/4/2022

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

First, looking back to last Shabbat, mazal tov to Ella Kalachek on becoming a bat mitzvah.  #EllaKalachekcandohardthings
Mazal tov also to her parents, Josh and Cindy, her brother Jacob, and her grandmother and our member, Sylvia Silver!

A little Torah, now.
Has anyone ever said to you, "You are a blessing!"?

What do you think they meant?
It might mean they understand you as being in some sense, sent from God.
Maybe you are a sign of a good future, or something that makes everything better, or gives hope.

It's a hard word, a hard idea, to pin down.

Is it something you are inclined to say, to someone else, ever, or not?  Why or why not?

And more questions: What does it mean when God says to Avram that "all the families of the earth will be blessed through you?"

And how might it have felt to be told, as Avram is, that God will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you?

This is some of the Torah and these are some of the questions we'll be thinking about at Kol Rinah this Shabbat.

Starting Sunday is the Rabbinical Assembly's convention, here in St. Louis, which I'm chairing.  It's been a blessing to be able to help with this, and I'm so excited to welcome a few colleagues to Kol Rinah this Shabbat, and 180 rabbis to St. Louis beginning on Sunday!

Today at noon on Zoom, Rabbi Shafrin will be teaching on God's first message to Avram and what it means to be a blessing.

Candle lighting is at 5:40pm.

At 6pm we'll have our First Fridays family-friendly Friday night service.

Tomorrow morning at 9:30am (not 9am!) will be the return of Kol Chadash, our special musical Shabbat morning service.

For  our Torah conversation, we'll be joined by Rabbis Ilana Garber and Sheryl Katzman of the Rabbinical Assembly.

After kiddush (there's kiddush!!!), we'll come back to the sanctuary for a conversation with colleagues from the RA about the present and future of the Conservatve movement.  We will be livestreaming this! (Yes, our livestream provider has been spotty, of late, so we can't guarantee it will work, which is why we're in the process of switching providers.  The problem is on their end; not ours.)

Mincha Saturday afternoon will be at 5:30pm, and Shabbat ends at 6:38pm.

Saturday night begins Daylight Savings Time--set your clocks back Saturday night!

We have a programmatic focus on Israel this coming week.  Sunday at 2pm at KR is a screening of a documentary about a secret bullet factory during the Israeli war of independence, and Tuesday evening at 7pm will be a conversation with our Israeli emissaries on last week's elections in Israel. Details for both are on our website.

Next Shabbat, for families with elementary school-age kids, check out our new service for you, Kol Hamishpacha!

Shabbat shalom, and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
