Dear Kol Rinah Family,
When we so fear the dark that we demand light around the clock, there can be only one result: artificial light that is glaring and graceless and, beyond its borders, a darkness that grows ever more terrifying as we try to hold it off. Split off from each other, neither darkness nor light is fit for human habitation. But if we allow the paradox of darkness and light to be, the two will conspired to bring wholeness and health to every living being.
Parker Palmer, from “There is a Season” (quoted by Rabbi Dianne Cohler-Esses)
The beautiful thing about Hanukkah candles is not the light itself, but the light at a time of darkness--the contrast. And the relatively small, weak light of the chanukiyah, which we are not even supposed to "use," but rather only enjoy, enhances this contrast. It's not about overwhelming the darkness with light, but about having a(n increasing) bit of light amidst darkness.
And yet, that more-than-half-full chanukiyah is starting to look pretty darn bright.
I'll have more to say about this tomorrow morning in my sermon.
It's cold, and I'll make this short.
No Torah Talk today (or next week).
Candle lighting is at 4:26pm.
We are having Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv tonight at 6pm. It will be a cappella. We have at least a couple of people coming to say kaddish tonight, so it would be great if you can brave the cold and join us tonight!
Saturday morning, starting at 9am, we'll celebrate Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Hanukkah, with Hallel, and three Torahs.
Shabbat ends at 5:30pm.
We will not have Shabbat mincha/maariv/havdalah tomorrow or next Saturday.
Next Thursday 12/29's morning minyan will be on Zoom at 7am, not in person.
Please also note that Mondays December 26 and January 2 are federal holidays, and that our office will be closed, and that morning minyan on Zoom will be at 8am.
Shabbat shalom, Chodesh Tov and Hanukkah Sameach, and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
