Dear Kol Rinah Family,
God spoke to Moses, saying:
Speak to the whole Israelite community and say to them: You shall be holy, for I, Adonai your God, am holy.
~ Leviticus 19:1-2
We read this week about the ways in which we can draw nearer to God, ways in which we can live a sacred life, a life full of meaning. This list of commandments, often seen as a sacred statement of values, is sometimes referred to as The Holiness Code. So what, according to this section of Torah, does it mean for people to strive toward holiness?
The answer seems to be that we are meant to create holiness through our relationships with others. The vast majority of the instructions and mitzvot found in the double parashah of Acharei Mot - Kedoshim are about how we interact with other people. Do we treat people fairly, or allow injustice to thrive? Do we support those in need or do we use power over others to get what we want? Do we uphold the sacred dignity of the individual or do we harden our hearts to those around us?
It may seem like a simple choice, but acting in ways that support others takes time, effort, attention, funding, and many people working together. But we are not asked to do this alone, as individuals. God specifically tells Moses to "Speak to the whole Israelite community," which teaches us that these obligations are meant to be done altogether.
And this is precisely what Kol Rinah's Mitzvah Day is all about! I am thrilled and looking forward to Kol Rinah's 2023 Mitzvah Day, which is coming up fast on Sunday, May 7 from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm.

We will have even more opportunities to get involved in our community, with hands on projects that can interest and inspire people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds. Bring your friends and family and have some delicious lunch grilled by our generous volunteers, and find ways that you can give back to our amazing St. Louis community and beyond. Our amazing team of volunteers have been hard at work making this an even more impactful experience than last year, both for participants and our partner organizations, so please join us on Sunday, May 7 for what looks to be an incredible meaningful day of helping and care!
