Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 5/19/2023 5/19/2023

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

I spend a lot of my time "in the trees," working with individuals, families, small groups, looking at individual words (or even letters) of the Torah.

But if you spend enough time with the trees, eventually you get a sense of the bigger forest.

The beginning of the book of Numbers that we read this week provides a bird's eye view of the how all the tribes are to be arrayed around the mishkan and the ark when they march and camp through the wilderness--it's not focused on on individuals, but on the placement of big groups.  It's about the whole community, and how the parts fit together.

This Shabbat morning, we'll honor Rabbi Wendy Love Anderson and Jeremy Buhler for their contributions to and true love of our shul, in advance of their moving from St. Louis over the summer.  It's a moment to notice two of the most important trees in the forest of Kol Rinah, and to appreciate all that they have given and done for us, how two people can change an entire community.

Next week, Thursday night, Friday and Saturday is Shavuot, the holiday that celebrates the receiving of the Torah.  For the first time since I've been here, the late-night study the first night of Shavuot, called a
Tikkun Leil Shavuot, that we do together with Bais Abe and CRC, will be here at Kol Rinah.  The full schedule is here (with details coming early next week on teachers and topics).  As we welcome folks from around the community, it would be great to have a robust turnout from our own shul.  It's a way of seeing ourselves as a part of the larger community--understanding the bigger forest or ecosystem that we're a part of.  RSVPs for dinner are due by Monday at 3pm, but no RSVPs are necessary for the learning!

Today at 12pm on Zoom, Rabbi Shafrin will lead Torah Talk.  There will be no Torah Talk next week because of Shavuot.

Tonight at 6pm we'll sing in Shabbat.

Candle lighting is at 7:52pm.

Tomorrow morning we start at 9am.  Tot Shabbat is at 10:45am, we also have an aufruf, and there's kiddush after service in honor of Rabbi Wendy Love Anderson and Jeremy Buhler.

Mincha Saturday evening will be at 7:45pm, and Shabbat ends at 8:56pm.

Shabbat shalom and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
