Summary
Dear Kol Rinah Family,
It's been a busy week, with many Sukkot festivities as well as the groundbreaking yesterday of the expansion of the Monica Lynne Neidorff Early Childhood Center.
Also, KDSK this week released a special series of stories on anti-Semitism in the St. Louis area. All the stories areavailable here, and I was interviewed for a story about synagogue security, which is here.
Tonight begins (Shabbat and) Shemini Atzeret--which translates roughly as the 8th day of gathering/ceasing. It's the festival day that comes at the end of Sukkot, but is really a festival in its own right. And then the next day, Sunday, is Simchat Torah, which is an extension of Shemini Atzeret, and the day we complete our cycle of reading the Torah and start it right again.
It's as if our joy is coming to a peak, before the long month before another real festival (Passover).
And here's the color commentary:
Tonight we'll have mincha, an abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat (because of the holiday) and ma'ariv at 6pm in the chapel.
Candle lighting is at 6:19pm.
Tomorrow morning starting at 9am, we'll have Shabbat/Shemini Atzeret services, incuding Hallel, the reading of a chapter or two of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), Torah Talk at about 10:30am with Will Soll (focused on Ecclesiastes), Yizkor at the end of the Torah service, and kiddush in the sukkah. (We still eat in the sukkah on Shemini Atzeret, but not on Simchat Torah, but we don't say the blessing for sitting in the sukkah on Shemini Atzeret).
Saturday night at 7:30pm we'll have maariv and erev Simchat Torah services.
Sunday morning starting at 9 is when the real festivities begin! We'll have Hallel, and then starting at around 10:10am, we'll begin Hakafot--the special service for taking out the Torah followed by dancing and singing, with music by Will Soll & Friends. We'll have treats and special things for kids of all ages, and everyone will get an aliya--it's going to be a blast for the whole community--don't miss it!
Following the Torah reading (when we finish reading the Torah and start it anew), we'll have a brunch-themed kiddush, around 11:15am. After kiddush, we'll conclude with Musaf.
The holiday ends at 7:13pm.
Wednesday afternoon October 11 at 5pm, there'll be a Camp Ramah in Wisconsin Park Playdate at Shaw Park Treetop Playground (2 Topton Way)--come to see camp friends, but especially, come to learn a little bit more about Ramah Wisconsin. I mentioned my son Caleb's Ramah experience on Yom Kippur--it has been transformational in all the right ways for him, and for so many other kids. If you're interested to learn more, come the playdate, or be in touch with me! Details are here.
Shabbat shalom, chag sameach, and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
