Shabbat Shalom and Happy Last Hours of Hanukkah from Rabbi Arnow 12/15/2023

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

I'm not the exactly "the rabbi who cried 'antisemitism.'" Which is to say, I don't see antisemitism (or antisemites) lurking under every stone, leaf, or tweet.  I haven't given many sermons on antisemitism over my nine and a half years at Kol Rinah.  It's not my favorite or go-to topic.

Tomorrow morning I will be speaking about antisemitism, the real as well as the ridiculous.  Because I'm concerned that the ridiculous is distracting from the real.  I'll be interested to hear your thoughts and reactions.

I hope your Hanukkah was (and is for a few more hours) nourishing.  Those few minutes of lighting five chanukiot with my family, usually on the later side when everyone was finally home after a very busy week, were precious, and sustaining for me.  And the few minutes I'd sometimes linger over the candles myself, when everyone else was off doing their thing was quiet, yet bright.  There's nothing quite like candlelight.

Even though Hanukkah is over with the onset of Shabbat, we'll light candles again tonight!

Candle lighting is at 4:23pm (it's getting later, again).

We'll gather at 6pm for an a cappella kabbalat Shabbat.

Tomorrow morning, we'll start at 9am. I'll be leading Torah Talk at about 10:10am, where we'll look at peculiar case of Shimon (aka Simeon, the brother of Joseph) as a hostage in Egypt.

Tot Shabbat will be at 10:45am with Karen Kern.  And I'll be speaking at around 11:15am.

Kiddush will follow services.

Shabbat ends at 5:25pm.

On Sunday a
t 11:30am we'll have a blood drive.  We need a few more people to sign up to make sure we have enough people coming to run the drive.  You have to sign up by Saturday night.

At 4pm Sunday, we'll have our annual
congregational meeting (Zoom and in person), where we'll have updates on the state of the congregation, and vote on new board members.

Next Friday is the 10th of Tevet, a minor fast day.  It's the only fast day that can fall and be observed on a Friday.

I'll be away for the last two Shabbatot in December, so there will be no Friday emails from me the next two weeks.  Saturday, December 23, Skylar Swim will be speaking at services.  And Saturday, December 30, Shula Neuman will speak on her experiences volunteering in Israel, from which she will have just returned.

For more and collected Israel information, see
this page on our website, as well as the Jewish Federation of St. Louis's Israel Resources page

Every Shabbat morning, we are still reciting a
prayer for the State of Israel, a prayer for Israel Defense Forces soldiers, and a prayer for hostages.

May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.

See you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
