Shavuot Tuesday evening at Bais Abe, for the community (i.e. Bais Abe, CRC & Kol Rinah) Tikkun Leil Shavuot (aka until-late at night Torah studying) was really lovely. To have so many different people, from different communities, all sitting, talking, and learning together, was beautiful and invigorating.
I look forward next year (God-willing) to hosting it here at Kol Rinah again.
Many of us were buoyed by the rescue of four hostages last weekend. I got the news in shul Shabbat morning from people who had heard it. Later, hearing more of the reporting on the rescue, and about the bombings and deaths, of Gazans as well as of an Israeli soldier, I found myself thinking of this line from the Prayer for Captives that we have been reciting: "Grant wisdom to the Israel Defense Forces that they may secure freedom for the captives without loss of life."
And there are still 120 hostages. We have not forgotten about them, and continue to pray for their release.
I listened this morning to Ezra Klein's newest podcast episode, where he talks with Amit Segal, an Israeli journalist and political commentator who comes at things much more from the right than the left. It's worth listening to, because Segal speaks probably for a majority (if not more) of Israelis.
Tonight I'll be here for Kabbalat Shabbat at 6pm (no instruments). Candle lighting is at 8:10pm.
Tomorrow, services begin at 9am. It's New Baby Shabbat!!!
I'll be leading Torah Talk at about 10:10am, where I'll reprise my teaching from Tuesday night at the Tikkun Leil Shavuot, on some of the most astonishingly creative midrash I think there is (and it's on this week's Torah portion-Naso).
Tot Shabbat will be at 10:45. and at the end of services (about 11:45am), we'll have a special blessing for all of our new babies.
Kiddush will follow.
Shabbat ends Saturday evening at 9:16pm.
Wednesday evening at 6:30pm here at the synagogue our Grief Havurah, led by Rabbi Jessica Shafrin, will meet.
Next Friday evening (June 21), we'll have our first Shabbat in the Park, at the South Shelter of Shaw Park, with an abbreviated Friday night service. We'll bring the grape juice and challah, you bring your picnic dinner.
June 22 will be Kol Chadash, and June 29 will be Pride Shabbat. It's a busy month!
May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.
Shabbat shalom and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
