Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 8/2/2024

Rabbi Arnow

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Catching up from the last couple of weeks, here's the sermon I gave on July 13 for Parashat Chukat about Kol Rinah being a capacious, inclusive congregation that values integrity, difference, mutual respect, and the spirit of machloket, of disagreement for the sake of heaven.

Here's
a d'var Torah I wrote for the St. Louis Jewish Light on Parashat  Balak from last week.

And
here are our outgoing Shinshinit Or Garti's beautiful remarks from last Shabbat.

As you may be aware, Tuesday, August 6 is the Missouri Primary Election.  For information on your polling place and what's on your ballot, check out
https://voteroutreach.sos.mo.gov/portal.  Polling places are open from 6am to 7pm, and bring a photo ID, if you have one.

You can also vote early, including at the Mid-County Library Branch here in Clayton.
All the early voting details and locations are here.

On Sunday from 6:30pm-8:45pm, we'll be doing get-out-the-vote phonebanking here at Kol Rinah, along with a brief talk from our member, former ADL Heartland Region director Karen Aroesty.
Details and registration here.

Kabbalat Shabbat tonight will be at 6pm - join me to sing and welcome Shabbat.
Candle lighting is at 7:52pm.

Tomorrow morning, we'll start at 9am. We'll be celebrating the aufruf of Julie Abeles and Adam Sandgarten.  Mazal tov to both of them, as well as to Julie's parents, our members Bette and Ron Abeles.

Tot Shabbat will be at 10:45am.

In my sermon, I'll be speaking about assuming the worst.

Shabbat ends at 8:53pm.

August 8 is the last day to get free shipping on Honey from the Heart.  See the details on our website to ship honey to friends and family for the holidays through Kol Rinah's Sisterhood.

Sunday night and Monday begin the new month of Av, as well as the period of
the Nine Days, the time leading up to the fast day Tisha b'Av, which begins Monday night August 12. Some people abstain during the Nine Days from drinking wine and eating meat (except on Shabbat), as well as doing laundry and wearing or buying new clothes, as we slowly increase our mourning as we approach Tisha b'Av.

Here's the schedule for Tisha b'Av:

Monday, August 12
6pm - mincha as usual on Zoom
7:59pm - fast begins
8:30pm - maariv with the reading of Eicha (Lamentations) in person in the sanctuary

Tuesday, August 13
7am - shacharit with Torah and Haftarah, followed by some study of Kinot (liturgical poems of mourning), all in person
6pm - mincha with Torah and Haftarah, followed by maariv, all on Zoom
8:27pm - fast ends

As a reminder, in addition to fasting, it's customary on Tisha b'Av not to wear leather, not to bathe, to abstain from intimate relations, and not to greet people.  So if I don't say hi, don't take offense.  If you can't fast, and/or find Tisha b'Av difficult, there are
some great resources here.

Friday night August 16, we'll have our last Shabbat in the Park for the summer, with services 6pm at the
Park , led by Karen Kern, Will Soll and me.  Bring a picnic dinner!  Even if it's hot outside, the area is shaded, and there's often a nice breeze!

We have a couple of mitzvah opportunities coming up.

During the month of August, Kol Rinah's Tzedek Team is sponsoring a school supplies drive to support KidSmart, which will distribute these items to teachers in the St. Louis area. A collection bin is located outside the sanctuary. Pens, pencils, glue sticks, markers, notebooks, folders, crayons and markers are welcome.

Our next blood drive will be Tuesday, August 20 from 2:30-6pm.
Details and signup here.

For more and collected Israel information, see this page on our website, as well as the Jewish Federation of St. Louis's Israel Resources page

Every Shabbat and festival morning, we are still reciting a
prayer for the State of Israel, a prayer for Israel Defense Forces soldiers, and a prayer for hostages, who have now been in captivity 301 days.

May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.

Shabbat shalom and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
