Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 8/9/2024

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

My sermon from last Shabbat about giving the benefit of the doubt is here.

Kabbalat Shabbat tonight will be at 6pm.  It being Shabbat Hazon, the Shabbat preceding Tisha b'Av, we'll use the customary mournful melody of the liturgical poem (aka Kina)
Eli Tzion for Lecha Dodi, and the general feeling of Kabbalat Shabbat will be a bit more on the mellow side.

Candle lighting is at 7:45pm.

Tomorrow morning, we'll start at 9am. It's Enchanting Shabbat, with congregants doing some of the Torah reading.

I'll be leading Torah Talk at about 10:10am, with a Tisha b'Av focus.

In my sermon, I'll be speaking about some of the anniversaries we're observing between today (August 9) and Tuesday (Tisha b'Av).

Shabbat ends at 8:44pm.

Monday night and Tuesday are the fast day Tisha b'Av, Here's the schedule:

Monday, August 12
6pm - mincha as usual on Zoom
7:59pm - fast begins
8:30pm - maariv with the reading of Eicha (Lamentations) in person in the sanctuary

Tuesday, August 13
7am - shacharit with Torah and Haftarah, followed by some study of Kinot (liturgical poems of mourning), all in person
6pm - mincha with Torah and Haftarah, followed by maariv, all on Zoom
8:27pm - fast ends

As a reminder, in addition to fasting, it's customary on Tisha b'Av not to wear leather, not to bathe, to abstain from intimate relations, and not to greet people.  So if I don't say hi, don't take offense.  If you can't fast, and/or find Tisha b'Av difficult, there are
some great resources here.

Friday night August 16, we'll have our last Shabbat in the Park for the summer, with services 6pm at the
Park, led by Karen Kern, Will Soll and me.  Bring a picnic dinner!  Even if it's hot outside, the area is shaded, and there's often a nice breeze!

We have a couple of mitzvah opportunities coming up.

During the month of August, Kol Rinah's Tzedek Team is sponsoring a school supplies drive to support KidSmart, which will distribute these items to teachers in the St. Louis area. A collection bin is located outside the sanctuary. Pens, pencils, glue sticks, markers, notebooks, folders, crayons and markers are welcome.

Our next blood drive will be Tuesday, August 20 from 2:30-6pm.
Details and signup here.

Wednesday evening August 21 at 6:30pm, our
Grief Havurah with Rabbi Jessica Shafrin will meet again.

I want to share two other support group opportunities, both through the Mirowitz Center at Covenant Place (on the campus of the J).

For more and collected Israel information, see this page on our website, as well as the Jewish Federation of St. Louis's Israel Resources page

Every Shabbat and festival morning, we are still reciting a
prayer for the State of Israel, a prayer for Israel Defense Forces soldiers, and a prayer for hostages, who have now been in captivity 308 days.

May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.

Shabbat shalom and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
