Dear Kol Rinah Family,
My sermon from last Shabbat on my tenth anniversary at Kol Rinah, the tenth anniversary of Michael Brown's killing, and Tisha b'Av is here.
Tonight, we'll have our last Shabbat in the Park for the summer, with services 6pm at the Park led by Karen Kern, Will Soll and me. Bring a picnic dinner! Even if it's hot outside, the area is shaded, and there's often a nice breeze!
Candle lighting is at 7:36pm.
Tomorrow morning, we'll start at 9am. It's Parashat Vaetchanan, which includes both the Shema and the Ten Commandments.
Tot Shabbat will be at 10:45am, and kiddush will follow services.
We'll be having mincha this Shabbat afternoon, at 6:35pm, followed by some food, some learning, ma'ariv and havdalah.
Shabbat ends at 8:34pm.
Next Saturday morning (8/24) will be the next Kol Chadash, our musical Shabbat morning service (starting at 9:30am, not 9am). Come this week, because the next one after that won't be until November 16!
We have a couple of mitzvah opportunities coming up.
During the month of August, Kol Rinah's Tzedek Team is sponsoring a school supplies drive to support KidSmart, which will distribute these items to teachers in the St. Louis area. A collection bin is located outside the sanctuary. Pens, pencils, glue sticks, markers, notebooks, folders, crayons and markers are welcome.
Our next blood drive will be this coming Tuesday afternoon, August 20 from 2:30-6pm. Details and signup here.
This Wednesday evening August 21 at 6:30pm, our Grief Havurah with Rabbi Jessica Shafrin will meet again.
High Holidays are coming, although not until October this year. But we're hard at work planning for them now. You should have already received the Yizkor mailing. If you did not, or have questions, please call the office.
The High Holiday mailing with more details will be going out in the mail in the next week or so, so look for that, which will include some Elul/High Holiday prep opportunties.
I'll also direct your attention to some great free, online learning opportunities in Elul/September offered by Hadar.
For more and collected Israel information, see this page on our website, as well as the Jewish Federation of St. Louis's Israel Resources page.
Every Shabbat and festival morning, we are still reciting a prayer for the State of Israel, a prayer for Israel Defense Forces soldiers, and a prayer for hostages, who have now been in captivity 315 days.
May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.
Shabbat shalom and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
