Dear Kol Rinah Family,
Lots of info in this email--read to the end!
This week we're reading the story of Noah and the flood. It took Noah 120 years to build the ark, according, at least, to midrash (legend). It's not obvious he had a lot of help, and that maybe was the point. In a world filled with violence and corruption, people cooperating for a holy purpose, or even for a larger common purpose, was not something that really happened, at least as I imagine that society.
So Noah had to do it by himself, and it took 120 years.
I'm very lucky that there's very little here at Kol Rinah that this Noah--me--needs to do completely by himself. We have a strong team of staff, great congregant volunteers, and much devotion to holy, shared purpose and projects.
One critical area though where we could do a little better this year is in our High Holiday Appeal. We are only able to create the services and experiences that we offer with your generous support. Moreover, we are only able to have the well-maintained facilities and infrastructure we need with your generous support.
It is a core value of Kol Rinah that no one is ever turned away from anything because of inability to pay. We simply ask people to be as generous as they can be.
If you have not yet donated to our High Holiday Appeal, here is the link:

So, take a minute, if you are able, and support this holy, communal endeavor we call Kol Rinah. Thank you so much!!!
The holiday are past, but there's still much happening.
Tonight, we'll begin welcoming Shabbat with an oneg at 5:30pm.
Candle lighting is at 5:41pm.
We'll welcome Shabbat with a family-friendly musical Kabbat Shabbat service at 6pm with Karen Kern, Will Soll and me, and then we're having our first potluck Shabbat dinner, for our KoREH families.
Tomorrow morning we'll begin at 9am. It's Rosh Chodesh (the new month of) Cheshvan, so we'll include Hallel, psalms of praise.
Rabbi Brad Horwitz will lead Torah Talk at 10:15am.
Karen Kern will lead Tot Shabbat at 10:45am.
I'll be speaking on the similarities of and differences between the societies of the flood and the Tower of Babel, with perhaps some reference to America on the precipice of a momentous election.
Kiddush is sponsored by Barbara and Amos Shamir in honor of their fiftieth anniversary. Mazal tov!
Saturday evening, Shabbat ends at 6:39pm.
And don't forget to "fall back"--change your clocks back an hour Saturday night!
As you surely know, Tuesday is Election Day.
Our Tzedek Committee has put together some fantastic non-partisan election resources on voting, finding about what's on your ballot (including all the various amendments and propositions), and ways to volunteer to serve as an election judge, and more.
Most important, don't forget to vote.
Next Saturday, November 9, we'll observe Veterans Shabbat, where our veterans will participate in services.
Sunday, November 10 at 9:15am, Helen Turner, Director of Education at the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum, will be teaching at Kol Rinah on "Antisemitism, Social Media and Our Kids." This is open to the entire community, and especially is geared towards parents. Details here.
Saturday, November 16 at 9:30am we'll have our next Kol Chadash musical service.
And Sunday, November 17 is our second Hanukkah Pop-up Craft Fair!
For more and collected Israel information, see this page on our website, as well as the Jewish Federation of St. Louis's Israel Resources page.
Every Shabbat and festival morning, we are still reciting a prayer for the State of Israel, a prayer for Israel Defense Forces soldiers, and a prayer for hostages, who have now been in captivity 392 days.
May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.
Chag Sameach, Shabbat shalom, and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
