Last week, in place of the prayer for hostages we had been reading for many months, we read this prayer by liturgist Alden Solovy, and it feels like it may continue to speak to us over these coming weeks, as hostages continue (God-willing) to be released each Shabbat. The hostages still in Gaza have been in captivity for 476 days. May they all come home soon.
Candle lighting tonight is at 4:58pm
A note: There's lots of sickness--cold, flu, Covid, etc.--going around right now. If you are not feeling well, please don't come to shul, and even if you're feeling well enough, consider wearing a mask to keep you and others healthy!
I'll be here for a no-instruments Kabbalat Shabbat at 6pm. Come sing together as we welcome Shabbat.
Tomorrow morning we'll start at 9am. We'll have our regular service in the sanctuary, as well as something new happening in the Sara Myers Room:
9-10:10 a.m • Ma'avar ("Transition") Celebrating the transition from one month to the next
Ma'avar is a service led by Will Soll that welcomes the coming month through text, discussion, meditation, prayer, song, and music. It will end in time for participants to join the main service for Torah reading or attend Torah Talk.
I'll be leading Torah Talk at 10:10am. We'll be looking at a moment when some (but not all!) Egyptians begin to believe what God says.
We'll have a mini-kiddush following services.
Shabbat ends at 5:59pm.
Please note that the scheduled "Stitch and Schmooze" for Sunday has been cancelled.
Beginning in March, our Israel Committee will be convening "Compassionate Conversations" around Israel, facilitated by Cyndee Levy. Details and signup (by February 21) are here. Among the goals are to foster a spirit of mutual respect for divergent perspectives and to serve as a model for how we, as a community, can comfortably engage in discussions when there is conflict. I'm really proud this is happening, and grateful to our Israel Committee and its chairs Shula Neuman and Rena Munster for their leadership.
May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.
Shabbat shalom, and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
