Dear Kol Rinah Family,
Don't forget to change your clocks Saturday night: "Spring Forward!"
I've been reflecting this week on the Arnow-versary event from this past Sunday evening.
I am so grateful to everyone who helped with the event. A special thank you to the event chairs, Penny Alper, Gina Bernstein and Barbara Shamir. There is so much work that goes into an event like this, most of which is never seen, and that even continues after the event. A a huge thank you also to the entire committee, including Bette Abeles, Mike Besmer, Laura Chaise, Tovah Enger, Denise Field, Elisa Israel, Gary Kodner, Gavriel Savit-Woods, Benjamin Singer, Lvav Spector and Karen Wetmore.
One of the things that made the event so special was that so many of you were able to be there--seeing a room filled with our Kol Rinah family is one of my favorite things in the world.
So many people donated so generously for the event--thank you to everyone who supported this event--you are supporting our shul, and everything that we do here.
The evening was also an opportunity think back over the last ten-plus years and realize how much we have accomplished together, from coming together through the first years of the merger, to saying farewell to two beloved synagogue buildings, fundraising for and creating our new home, figuring out how to live through Covid, and then October 7 and the last fifteen months.
Amidst all this, we as a congregation are thriving in so many ways. None of that though is attributable to any one person. Rather, just about everything we do is as a team, through partnerships and committees, through people working together.
I'm excited to think, to dream, about what we can to over the coming years, together!
Tonight, candle lighting is at 5:44pm. Karen Kern, Will Soll and I will be here for a musical Kabbalat Shabbat at 6pm.
Tomorrow morning is KoREH Shabbat. I'm so excited that we'll be welcoming more than a hundred and thirty of our Sunday school kids, parents and teachers. Our kids will be participating in services with their classes.
A big thank you to Cindy Kalachek, our KoREH director, for all her work coordinating KoREH Shabbat, and to Karen Kern too, as well to all our teachers, kids, and parents!
Services begin at 9am, and we're asking all our KoREH families to arrive by 9:25am or so, so everyone can see everything all the kids are doing and so no one misses their moment.
I'll be leading a short Torah Talk starting at about 10:10am, where we'll look the special reading for Shabbat Zachor.
This Shabbat is known as "Shabbat Zachor," because we read "Parashat Zachor," an extra little Torah reading from Deuteronomy that commands us to remember ("zachor") what Amalek did to us, attacking the weak among us. This is the only section of Torah that it is a mitzvah (a commandment) to hear read each year. With that in mind, we'll read it in its usual place--at the end of the regular Torah reading, before the Haftarah. But then we'll also read it again for anyone else who missed at the very end of services, before kiddush and Adon Olam. (It's very short--just a few verses.)
Kiddush will follow services.
Shabbat Zachor always occurs on the Shabbat preceding Purim, which means Purim is coming! All the Purim info is here: https://www.kolrinahstl.org/purim.
We can still use help delivering Mishloach Manot. Signup is here.
Tuesday, March 11 is the deadline to RSVP for the pre-Purim dinner on March 13.
Thursday is Taanit Esther, the fast of Esther. The fast begins at 5:39am, and ends at 7:42pm. Services that morning will be at 7am in person.
Please note that we will not have mincha that day, and there will be no services on Zoom that afternoon or evening.
Here's the rest of the Purim schedule for Thursday:
5:00-6:15pm Activities for kids
5:30-6:15pm Dinner (for those not fasting) (RSVP required by March 11)
6:15pm Maariv and Megillah reading featuring costume parade and shpiel!
Friday, March 14
7:00am Shacharit and Megillah reading in-person and livestreamed.
That next Shabbat (3/15) will be Brotherhood Shabbat.
We don't know what the future will hold for the remaining hostages, who have been in captivity in Gaza now for 518 days. May they all come home soon.
May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.
Shabbat shalom, and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
