Dear Kol Rinah Family,
You may not be aware of it, but I think it's fair to say that we're in the midst of a tiny renaissance of Jewish learning at Kol Rinah.
Shavuot was last week, which we celebrate in significant measure by studying Torah (Torah writ large).
A couple of weeks before was the first session of Verein's :"What Do Jews Believe?" series. (Verein is a group of members of our congregation who are intrepid independent learners, organizing thoughtful programs and discussions on a huge range of Jewish topics, from science to theology to the Yiddish theater.) A couple weeks ago now was Rabbi James Stone Goodman and Will Soll's program contextualizing the music of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach amidst chasidic music and niggunim. A big thank you to Ralph Graff and Richard Gavatin for leading Verein!
And this week, Jaron Asher and Larry Friedman will present on Judaism and Budaism, and pantheism, respectively, at 4pm on Zoom, with more presentations on the calendar already. All the details are here.
Coming up this Tuesday night at 7pm in person, Rabbi Daniel Sentell will be teaching the first of three sessions on Jewish business ethics. He has deep experience in this area, and is a wonderful teacher and presence. The first session will be on "Honest Thieves and Barnes & Noble Break Ups: Real Stories from an American Beis Din (Jewish Court)." Details for this and the rest of the sessions are here.
This learning is sponsored by our newishly reconstituted Community Learning Committee, which has some great things planned for July and August as well, that are oriented to art, literature and music. Thank you to Lisa Schlesinger for taking on chairing the committee!
No one should feel like they need to go to every session of Jewish learning that we offer, but my hope is that every member of our Kol Rinah family will find a couple of things over the course the year that speak to them and that they can get to, whether Zoom or in person, on Shabbat or a weekday, a daytime or evening.
Looking back at last week, mazal tov to Isabelle Emmenegger, who celebrated her bat mitzvah. Mazal tov to her parents, Dana and Eric, and her brothers, Eli and Isaac, and to the entire extended family, too.
Our Tikkun Leil Shavuot Sunday night was a great evening of community and learning. To have so many different people, from different congregations, all together, talking, learning, snacking, is a very precious thing. Thank you to our partners at Bais Abe and CRC too.
Tonight, at 6pm, we'll have our first Shabbat in the Park, with an abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat and ma'ariv at the South Shelter in Shaw Park. If it's raining, don't come and we'll move inside to the synagogue. But if it's dry enough, we'll be out there! (If we're going to be inside, we'll send an email.) Bring a picnic dinner, and we'll have the grape juice and challah.
In good news, the eruv is repaired and up everywhere!
Candle lighting is at 8:06pm tonight.
Tomorrow we'll start at 9am, and it'll be Sisterhood Shabbat, with kiddush to follow. Mazal tov and thank you to our Sisterhood for all they do for our congregation!!!
Tot Shabbat with Karen Kern will be at 10:45am.
Shabbat ends at 9:08pm.
Even as Clayton is slowly getting cleaned up after the tornado, other parts of St. Louis were hit much harder, even. Becky Mollett is organizing people to go this Sunday (June 8) to volunteer to help wherever it may be needed. If you're interested in joining her and a few others, email her at beckymollett@gmail.com.
Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow
May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.
Shabbat shalom, and see you at the park and in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
