My sermon from last Shabbat, about an episode from last week's parasha, Zohran Mamdani, and July 4, is available here.
Tonight, Karen Kern, Will Soll and I will lead a musical Kabbalat Shabbat and ma'ariv in the sanctuary starting at 6pm. We should have a good crowd--come join us!
Candle lighting is at 8:09pm.
During services, we'll also hear briefly from Rabbis Josh Skoff and Jared Skoff, son and grandson of Rabbi Benson Skoff, who was for many years the rabbi of Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel, one of the two congregations that merged to form Kol Rinah.
Following services is dinner for those who signed up, and then around 8 or 8:15pm, we'll hear more from Rabbis Josh and Jared Skoff, and also have an opportunity for others to share memories of Rabbi Skoff.
I know this will be a special and meaningful program--thank you to Ralph Graff and Richard Gavatin for organizing.
Tomorrow morning services will start at 9am. I'll be leading Torah Talk at about 10:10am.
Shabbat ends at 9:13pm.
Sunday, July 13 is the 17th of Tammuz, a sunup-to-sundown fast that commemorates the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem, leading to the destruction of the temple three weeks later on the 9th of Av. Speaking of the 9th of Av, if you'd like to read part of Eicha (Lamentations), or any of the Haftarot that are read in the melody of Eicha, please let me know asap!
The fast begins at 4:14am and ends at 8:50pm. We'll have services on Zoom at 8am and 6pm.
Also on Sunday, at 4pm on Zoom (and only on Zoom, despite what it says on the website), Verein will be hosting their final conversation on "What Do Jews Believe?", focused on "what can we expect from our God?" Details and signup to get the link are here.
The next two Tuesday nights (July 15 and July 22), both at 7pm in person here at Kol Rinah, Avi Mazzeo will be teaching on "Exploring Sephardic Music." It's going to be beautiful, with great music. Details and signup here.
Next Saturday (July 19), we'll be having "Sages Shabbat," where we'll be honoring our members ages 80+.
Sunday, July 20, our Israel Committee, together with St. Louis Friends of Israel, will be hosting a screening of October8, a film about antisemitism on college campuses. Details and signup are here.
Let us not forget about the hostages, who have been in captivity now 644 days, amidst the ongoing war in Gaza, where civilians continue to suffer.
May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.
Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
