Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 8/22/2025

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Here's a d'var Torah on last week's parasha that I wrote for the St. Louis Jewish Light.

Summerfest last weekend with Neshama Carlebach was beautiful and uplifting.  It was planned so carefully and everything went incredibly smoothly.  Thank you to all who were involved, in ways large and small, in making Summerfest happen!!!

This Shabbat, we'll celebrate the bar mitzvah of Ethan Schwartz.  Mazal tov to his parents, Aaron and Molly Schwartz, and his brothers Gavin and Nick Corral and Jonah Schwartz.

Tonight we'll have services at
Shaw Park at the South Shelter at 6pm.  Join us for an abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat and ma'ariv, we'll bring the challah and grapejuice, and feel free to bring a picnic dinner.

Candle lighting is at 7:26pm.

Services tomorrow, with Ethan's bar mitzvah, will be at 9am.

Shabbat ends at 8:24pm.

There's much happening over the coming week, and weeks, at Kol Rinah.

This Sunday at 4pm, our friend Rabbi James Stone Goodman will be reading from and signing copies of his new book, Black Fire White Fire.
Details here.

Tuesday evening, August 26 at 7pm on Zoom, our short story discussion group will have its next meeting, discussing Edith Pearlman's story, "Day of Awe."  Registration (to get the story and Zoom link) is
here.

Wednesday, August 27 at noon on Zoom, I'll be teaching the first of three High Holiday preparation classes, this one on "Hiddenness: A Mystical Look at the Days of Awe."
Details and registration to get the Zoom link are here.

Thursday, August 28 at 7pm, our member Caroline Goldenberg will be teaching "Introduction to Hand Lettering," which is a form of Jewish calligraphy.  Details and signup are here.

Ongoing through the month of August is our School Supplies Drive.
Details of the kinds of things that are needed are here.

For more happening after this week,
check our website.

The High Holidays are coming, and all the details have gone out by mail to our members, and are on the
website here.  If you would like to participate in services in any way, by having an aliya, leading a part of the service, sounding shofar (we could use a couple more people), and more, please let me know, and I'll forward your email to the appropriate person.

Let us not forget about the hostages, who have been in captivity now 686 days, amidst the ongoing war in Gaza, where civilians continue to suffer.

May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.

Shabbat shalom and see you at the park and at shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
