Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Arnow 8/29/2025

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Our hearts go out to the Catholic community of Minneapolis.  These kinds of attacks are always upsetting, but attacks based on hate, and targeting religious communities feel closer to home to me.

I do want to share something written by the editor of the Twin Cities Jewish newspaper and that area's JCRC's deputy executive director,
asking us not to make this attack about Jews.  It's important to remember that we are not the only ones who can be victims, but we can stand with all those who are feeling vulnerable, just as we hope they'll stand with us at our times of need.

My friend, our friend, Pastor Carlos Smith of Refresh Community Church, has a podcast, and he invited me to be on it and the episode was released earlier this week.  It's available on
Youtube here.  It's not always an easy conversation, but I'm grateful for the conversation, and the relationship.

Looking back at last week, mazal tov to Ethan Schwartz on his bar mitzvah last Shabbat.  Mazal tov as well to his parents, Aaron and Molly Schwartz, and his brothers Gavin and Nick Corral and Jonah Schwartz.

This Shabbat, we'll celebrate the bat mitzvah of Leela Ferrendelli.  Mazal tov to her, as well as to her mother, Laurie Landay, and her father, Mike Ferrendelli.

We had a great crowd last Friday night for our last Shabbat in the Park.  Tonight we'll be back in the building at 6pm for Kabbalat Shabbat and ma'ariv with Karen Kern.

Candle lighting tonight is at 7:16pm.

Services tomorrow will be at 9am.

Shabbat ends at 8:13pm.

Wednesday, September 3 at noon on Zoom, I'll be teaching the second of three High Holiday preparation classes, this one on "Halakha: Laws of the Days of Awe."  Details and registration to get the Zoom link are here.

Next Sunday at 3pm, we'll be having a special program on the painter Edward Boccia, who painted the ten large paintings mounted to the ceiling of the Staenberg Family Community Hall that previously were in the sanctuary at BSKI.  We'll be showing a documentary about Boccia, and then hearing from his daughter and our member (and board chair) Gary Kodner about Boccia's relationship with BSKI, and they'll take questions as well.  Details are here--this will be a very special program!

Next Saturday (September 6) will be New Baby Shabbat, and the following Saturday, September 13, will be
Heirloom Shabbat, and we'll also hear that morning, both during services and then after kiddush, from Uri Keidar, the executive director of Israel Hofsheet and a leading advocate for freedom of choice in how Jews live, marry, and express their Judaism in Israel.

Ongoing for a few more days through the month of August is our School Supplies Drive.
Details of the kinds of things that are needed are here.

The High Holidays are coming, and all the details have gone out by mail to our members, and are on the website here.  If you would like to participate in services in any way, by having an aliya, leading a part of the service and more, please let me know, and I'll forward your email to the appropriate person.

Let us not forget about the hostages, who have been in captivity now 693 days, amidst the ongoing war in Gaza, where civilians continue to suffer.

May the one who makes peace in the heavens make peace over us, and over all Israel, and over all who dwell in the world.

Shabbat shalom and see you at shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
