July 12, 2019 - Rabbi Arnow

Dear Kol Rinah Family,

Please note: the
St. Louis Eruv is currently down. It is expected to be repaired before Shabbat. Please call 314-863-1811 after 4pm to check on the status of the Eruv.

I don’t write often about the eruv. The basic idea of an eruv, as a reminder, is that on Shabbat Jews are not permitted to carry things from one domain (one person’s property) to another, or from a public to a private domain or a private to a public domain. An eruv is a kind of legal fiction that makes a large area one domain, so that people may carry things within it on Shabbat.

The eruv itself literally is a kind of string or wire going around a large area, and it needs to be intact. Every Thursday, the eruv is checked to make sure that the entire thing is intact, and yesterday, because of construction at Wash U, they discovered it needed some repairs.

An eruv is an important part of an observant Jewish community, enabling people to carry children, food, books, tallitot, and anything else they might want on Shabbat. I’m very grateful to the folks who maintain the eruv, and I support with a significant donation it from my discretionary fund every year.

Services tonight will be mellow, and a cappella in the chapel at 6pm. Candle lighting is at 8:09pm. Tomorrow morning we’ll be in the lower auditorium at 9am. I’ll be leading Torah Talk at 10:10am, and speaking about the idea of emotional labor.

After Kiddush, we’ll have an opportunity to learn about Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, one of the giants of 20th century Jewish thought and life. Dr. Marty Israel will be presenting.
Details here.

Mincha Saturday afternoon will be at 7:15pm, and Shabbat ends at 9:13pm.

It’s a pretty quiet week at shul, but please do come to minyan. People are often away over the summer, so your attendance really helps.
Sign up here.

Shabbat shalom and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
