As Shabbat is approaching, I’ll make this VERY quick. Services tonight are 6pm in the chapel—new melodies with Rabbi Shafrin and Karen Kern. Candle lighting is at 4:36pm!!!
Tomorrow morning, we’ll celebrate the aufruf (and upcoming marriage) of Skylar and Zeke Swim. Torah Talk with Rabbi Shafrin will be at 10:10am.
Mincha Saturday afternoon will be at 3:35pm and Shabbat ends at 5:34pm.
Kol Rinah’s Early Childhood Center is having a book sale at the Novel Neighbor (7905 Big Bend Blvd.) in Webster Groves on Sunday. Here are the details:
We wanted to remind you that the KRECC book fair is happening this week (online) and in-store on Sunday, November 10 from noon-6pm. There will be a family program from 3-6pm in-store with snacks, activities and music with Miss Karen (Kern). The activity room will also be staffed with ECC teachers so that parents can have time to shop without distraction. This year, we are working with the independent book store, The Novel Neighbor, in Webster Groves.
This is a great time to start some holiday shopping! KRECC will receive 20% of the proceeds and we're hoping to make this our best book fair yet, while also supporting a local business.
And now for a very little bit of Torah… So often, journeys and change begin out of self-interest, and there’s nothing wrong with that. When God says to Abram (later to become Abraham), “Lech Lecha,” at the beginning of this week's Torah portion (Genesis 12:1), it’s kind of repetitive, like “You go, you.” So, say the midrash and Rashi, God was telling Abram, “Go for yourself.” It’s ok not to do something for a higher purpose, but just to start based on your own self-interest. We have the sense that that which we undertake even for the wrong reasons eventually can become for the right reasons.
And, doing something for yourself is not a bad reason, anyway!!!
What do you need to do for your own self-interest this Shabbat, and at this moment in your life?
Shabbat shalom and see you in shul,
Rabbi Noah Arnow
