May 2019 Youth News

Thank you to everyone for your support of the Purim Carnival! We had so many donations for booth sponsorships and silent auction, volunteers, and attendees to make the event a huge success! Everyone had a blast the day of from the USYers and Kadimaniks running the booths to the kids running rounds of the obstacle course designed by Karen Kern! We increased our profits by 84% from the previous year and raised well over $3,000! We are so lucky to have such a generous and giving community that supports our youth and allows them to develop their leadership skills and to engage in programming to create their own Jewish community within Kol Rinah and beyond.

In addition to community and leadership, Tikkun Olam is another core value fostered by USY. We have been supporting the organization Shaving Israel this year. Shaving Israel educates US citizens about the needs and essentials of the Israel Defense Force (IDF) and funds the purchase of toiletries, personal items and food vouchers from Israeli suppliers for members of the IDF who are in need or deprived of family support systems. A portion of our profits from the Purim Carnival will be donated to Shaving Israel, teaching our kids the value of giving back to others.

Our youth group sent four kids to the final regional convention of the year, Spring Kallah, in Ogden, Iowa. At Spring Kallah, the USYers vote on the Regional Executive Board (REB) for the following school year. It is amazing to see the bravery and passion of the high schoolers who run for these positions, giving speeches to the entire region for their support. KRSTL’s own Yael Portman was one of those brave high schoolers to run for REB, and while she didn’t win, we are still very proud of her and her great efforts, and we know she will continue to do excellent things for our chapter!

We are excited to wrap up the year with our own local chapter board elections. We have some veteran leaders now to lead us into the following year as well as some budding leaders, excited to get involved and be a larger part of our chapter.
