Learning Something New About Ourselves Have you ever found yourself in a situation that is totally new? For many of us, it can be intimidating, scary, and uncomfortable, but on occasion, new situations can also be exciting and engaging. Each and every time we push ourselves into new situations, we open up new possibilities to learn about ourselves and our world. This past month has been an incredible opportunity to learn who we are at the Kol...Read more...

Building Connections in the Age of the New It is incredible to think that 2019 is already here. Recently, I have dwelled at length on all of the new things that have been popping up in the world around us. We are just beginning a new secular year and about to start the new Hebrew month of Sh’vat. We have just started a new book in the Torah, Sefer Shemot (The Book of Numbers). In fact, it seems like new is the new normal. Seth Godin, a...Read more...

Perseverance Is Key I love stories. The best stories have way to keep delivering a timely message in each and every generation. Here is one of my favorites from the great storyteller, Aesop: A crow is flying around on a hot summer day looking for water. Finally, after hours of searching, he comes across a pitcher of water, but when he tries to stick his beak in he can't reach the water. He tries and tries, slowly getting more dehydrated. Just...Read more...

Learning to Serve I was sitting in a small, 2-bedroom apartment in Wayland, MA while my host took a quick phone call. This was about 14 years ago, and I was a young community organizer doing 1-1 meetings and trying to train leaders in how to fight for the things that matter most to them. I was finishing up a conversation with a young woman who was active in one of my organization’s member churches, and I was trying to convince her to be a...Read more...

A Place Where You Are Seen One of my favorite images from all of the Talmud comes in Tractate Brachot 6b, which translates as “blessings.” The story goes that when someone who regularly comes to minyan or synagogue communal events is suddenly absent, God inquires as to their whereabouts. I love the picture of God sitting at minyan on a Tuesday thinking, “Where’s Rivka? Has anyone seen Rivka? She wasn’t at minyan today, but she ALWAYS...Read more...

From Religious School to Something New When I started here at Kol Rinah in August of 2016, the thing that people told me they wanted most from the new Religious School Director was to make Religious School less like the Religious Schools that they grew up with. Maybe some of you had similar experiences: being bored, feeling forced to go, not really understanding why the time you spent there was meaningful or what the goals of the learning...Read more...

“B’nai He-Atid: Children of the Future” One of the greatest joys of my life has been the ability to be a part of Jewish summer camp communities. I grew going to Camp Interlaken JCC in Eagle River WI, spending a total of 13 summers back in Wisconsin’s beautiful North Woods. We had a song there that we loved to sing after dinners called “B’nai He-Atid,” (Children of the Future), and we would scream out the words as we danced...Read more...

A Year of Hope and Change Happy New Year everyone! Starting off something new is always an occasion to hope and wish for a better future. At times like these, we can see the bright horizon of tomorrow out in the distance and with a clean slate we hope that we can take advantage of all the opportunities life will bring us in the year ahead. I think that Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, formerly the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, summed it up most...Read more...

Building Relational Leadership Well, we made it through all of the fall holidays and are well into the month of Heshvan. I want to thank everyone who helped out, ushered, gabbai-ed, organized, planned and gave their time and energy toward making Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hoshana Rabba, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah such meaningful and joyful holidays. As we start the year in earnest with our regular schedules each week, I have...Read more...
