I suppose that it shouldn’t be any surprise that as our Engagement Coordinator I often think about what “engagement” fully means or how can we engage more members, etc. A dear friend of mine recently said that engagement is really a process of how we interact with people at all times. To me, this means engagement is really all about relationships. One of the foremost experts on relationships is Dr. John Gottman. In his book, “The Relationship Cure”, he says the following:
Writer Anne Lamott tells the story of her little brother agonizing over a school report he had to write about birds. Frozen by the size and complexity of the task, he turned to his dad for help. Anne writes, “My father put his arm around my brother’s shoulder and said, ‘Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.’” So it is with our ties to friends, family and coworkers. Complex, fulfilling relationships don’t suddenly appear in our lives full formed. Rather, they develop one encounter at a time…. Building better emotional connections is like any other valuable life goal, in that it requires attention and sustained effort. But I’m certain that few other endeavors can promise a reward as rich as connecting does.
The High Holiday season is here. I invite you to please join us for one service or many. I invite you to join us for Selichot, Tashlich, Simchat Torah or a dinner in the Sukkah event. I invite you to come to a Shabbat morning service, a Family or Tot Shabbat service, a Torah Talk, or our MLNECC groundbreaking. I invite you volunteer to be a greeter, an usher, to help at an event…. I invite you to come. Come and get to know one another better. Come and build fulfilling relationships and make connections, both big and small. Come and get to know who our wonderful Kol Rinah members are, bit by bit, one encounter at a time.
